Anastasia?

Thoughts?
We both really like it - Ana for short.

Was wondering how most people would pronounce though.
Would you say it with 5 syllables ie An a stay zee uh or with four with asia at the end rhyming with the continent?

Myfriend's daughter is Annastasia (2 n's for some reason), and I think it's a nice name. She's now 16 and Ihaven't met an other Anastasia in person, so it's quite unusual.

We pronounce it Annastayzeeyah.

PepsiPopcorn · 28/02/2011 15:08

Lovely :) I'd pronounce it Ann-a-STAY-zee-uh.

meditrina · 28/02/2011 19:16

Absolutely lovely for an Easter baby!

laosvher · 28/02/2011 19:18

What does Anastasia have to do with easter?
I'd say it anna-stays-ee-ah
Very pretty name

berryshake · 28/02/2011 19:23

Anna-STAY-zyuh

NadiaWadia · 28/02/2011 19:35

laosvher - the meaning of 'Anastasia' is apparently 'she who will rise again' or something like that - which links to the resurrection, which links to Easter. I think.

Nice name. How about the Eastern European pronunciation (that's where the name is most popular) which is something like Anna-STAH-sya, not STAY-sia, 3rd syllable rhymes with car, not hay.

Beautiful name! Lots of lovely nn's too...

Oblomov · 28/02/2011 20:11

One of my favourite names Ever. Would have called my daughter this, if I had had one !! I did like Elise too though.
So Russian. The last Tsar, Nicholas II's daughter.
Lovely name. Like Ana for short. Do not like the two n's version. Prefer the traditional spelling.I like a name that can be shortened to something proper.
So unusual. But not noncey or pretencious. Only met one. And she was really nice and we became friends.
Wonder why its not more popular actually Hmm

We seriously considered Anastasia too - in fact it's still a possibility - and particularly liked the Irish shortened version Ansty - my OH's granny was Ansty. I really like it.

I'd pronounce it Anna-stay-sia, as most others say. I've spent a lot of time in eastern Europe over the years but still think I'd go with the 'English' pronunciation.

mathanxiety · 01/03/2011 14:54

Anastasia means resurrection (anastasis). I love this name -- there are lots of them in my mum's (Irish) family, both the Greek/Russian Anastasia and the Latin version Anastatia, which is nice and very unusual too (pr Ana-stay-sha).

ThisFeelsWeird · 01/03/2011 15:10

A common nn for Anastasia is Nancy. I know one and she is lovely. (She is 50plus though)

lilly13 · 01/03/2011 16:08

Anastasia should be pronounced as Ana-sta-see-ya, however, most Anglo-Saxon people pronounce it as Ana-stei-zha (which sounds horrific to all of us orthodox christians). My cousin named his child this name and spelled it as AnastaSSia to avoid common mispronouciation... Nicknames are Ana, Stassia or Nastya (if you are Russian)

mummypontipine · 01/03/2011 16:11

if a lovely name has more than one nn stipulating which doesn't always work and ana could very easily end up as stacey .

anastasia is lovely we decided against it for dd because we were concerned that despite our best efforts ,she may end up with the nn stacey which was not to our liking . just something to bear in mind but if you love it go for it .

mathanxiety · 01/03/2011 16:27

The Anastasia I know best picked her own nn at a very young age -- it was one that would never have occurred to me but it's clearly derived from the name, and a bona fide nn for Anastasia too with long antecedents. And no-one has ever called her Stacey. Wink

mathanxiety · 01/03/2011 16:29

The two Russian Anastasias I know are Asya and Nastya.

hocuspontas · 01/03/2011 16:34

I appear to be in the minority. I'm afraid it sounds like it's some sort of disease to me.

TabithaTwitchet · 01/03/2011 17:01

Glad that the response is mainly positive and that most people would pronounce it like me. I do like the Russian pronunciation, but I think as we are both british we would go for an anglicised one. I dont like Stacy as a nickname but at least there are nice possibilities! I dont like any shortenings of my own or dd1 names so we just use full names all the time.

Ooh - this and Tatianna where my girl choices, DH hated them which was quite lucky as we had a DS!!

Whelk · 01/03/2011 20:34

I know a divine Anastasia who shortens it to Tasie. She is in her 70s.

Grabaspoon · 01/03/2011 20:38

I like it but I think it depends on the surname etc.

Remember you even have a disney princess named Anastasia

mathanxiety · 01/03/2011 20:42

I know one whose family were originally Greek, and she is Tass-IA
