How do you pronounce it? Is it KATLIN with a A like in cat or KAITLIN, as in Kate?

Thanks!

like Kate

elliephant · 28/02/2011 13:02

No, not kate lynn, that's an amercian or australian pronunciation. It's cat lean or caught lin .

Maternelle · 28/02/2011 13:04

Thanks. I am asking because from what I can find the original pronunciation was cat and in the 70s the kate pronunciation became more popular. We want to get it right!
DH is worried it might sound too american.

Cross-post elliephant. Thanks, this is what we had understood. We wanted to make sure.

My mother is a Cotch-leen...

RCToday · 01/03/2011 01:54

There are loads of Caitlins round here and they are all prenounced as KateLynn, I havent a clue about the history of the name though, just what the DC's call them and when they write party invitations Grin

Im in the west of Ireland, so accents will make a difference, I have never met a Cotchleen

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 01/03/2011 02:08

An Irishman told me it's pronounced very similar to "kathleen", but with less of the "th" and more of the "t".

Most Caitlins are KateLyns, I think.

mathanxiety · 01/03/2011 15:06

Cotch-leen would be closest to the Irish pronunciation.

But you'll need to spell it with the fada on the last I and spend your life explaining 'it's not Kate-lynn' if you choose this name and want to use the Irish pronunciation. Kathleen would be far easier...

themammy73 · 01/03/2011 23:02

This is my daughter's name and she would, on occasion, be called 'Cotch-leen' even though we call her 'Kate-Lyn'. We were informed when registering her birth the correct pronunciation was Cotchleen. We live in the Midlands.

Very rude of the registrar to tell you how to pronounce your own daughter's name, IMO!
