its fine if your dad is david bowie

shmoz · 25/02/2011 05:21

or if you're a character on Grange Hill

BarbieLovesKen · 25/02/2011 10:31

Dont be ridiculous

DirtyMartini · 25/02/2011 10:36

It's one of those names that will be fine if the kid is the right personality type but could really really be a bad fit if he's not.

It seems to presuppose certain qualities and makes you think the parents have certain expectations of their child, eg that he'll be totally comfortable with the notion of standing out from the crowd, won't mind the inevitable associations with Ziggy Stardust or Ziggy Marley, will be a cool urban hipster ... etc.

Not great. IMO.

  1. Stardust
  2. Grange Hill
  3. That twat from Big Brother that went out with Chanelle
JaxTellersOldLady · 25/02/2011 10:39

nope, never. I agree with cuppatea

Sarsaparilllla · 25/02/2011 10:40

No, it's ok as a nn but not a proper name, it's bonkers

frida75 · 25/02/2011 14:53

I LOVE it! But at the same time I'm not brave enough to call my DS due in June it. I'd like to have it as a nn but there's no way I'm calling a kid of mine Sigmund/zigmund Grin Shame everyone feels so negative towards it coz it's only a name but it does effect the way you feel about it Sad

B52s · 25/02/2011 15:12

...played guitar...

Fine as a NN. Don't saddle the poor lad with it as a first name though.

mathanxiety · 25/02/2011 19:05

Sigmund/ Zigmund are not bad imo.

kerala · 25/02/2011 19:13

I have come across a 4 year old one. And a 4 year old Iggy (short for Ignatius).

MrsMcCave · 25/02/2011 19:32

I wanted Ezekiel, nn Ziggy. DH won't even consider it though. Or how about Isaac? A little bit tenuous maybe, but tbh you could call him what you like and still have the nn.

Janoschi · 26/02/2011 01:03

Sigfried or Zachary might do it...? I know how you feel though. I wanted Buzz for a boy but could only come up with a very tenuous Barnabas as a full name. On the other hand, I'm not sure why I felt compelled to use a longer name on the birth certificate - my name was put down officially as Kate, not Katherine. Lots of older folk also only have shortened names on their certificates (Millie, Betty etc) so I guess it's a recent worry. You could definitely ignore it!
