Oscar or Sam? 37 weeks and still no name for a boy...

Hi
My dh and I can't agree on a name for a boy (we have a name for a girl).
I really like the name Oscar. DH is not too keen on it.
He loves the name Sam. I dislike it.

There are a few more names that we both kind of like but we both know that none of these is the one. Help!

It will have to be between Oscar and Sam but neither of us is willing to budge :)

What do you guys think?

thanks

Sam..for me.

Oscar's a bit done IMO!

theagedparent · 24/02/2011 17:27

Both very popular, I like Sam the best

Mumtobe0211 · 24/02/2011 17:34

I agree, both very popular, I'd go for Oscar.

Busspuzzle · 24/02/2011 18:47

hard to choose oscar more of a now name so would go for sam.

breatheslowly · 24/02/2011 18:53

I like Sam better, Oscar is a cat's name for me (sorry to all of the parents of Oscars out there).

Could you each write a list of 10 names and see if there are any you both like?

Alternatively let it rest, then wait until your DC is born and as he is put in your arms, turn to your DH and say firmly "Oscar". Your DH will probably agree having seen you give birth.

pinkhebe · 24/02/2011 18:56

my cat was called Sam Grin

I like them both but have been put off the name Sam by a couple of unruly boys, whereas the Oscar I know is a delight Grin

greenlotus · 24/02/2011 19:07

Sam/Samuel is a nice name but has been in the top 15 names for 5 years so your son is likely to have a lot of duplication in his classes, if that bothers you! Your DH might not have realised it is so popular and he will probably be Sam T or Sam P.

I cannot believe people I know are still having boys and calling them Jack, Thomas and Harry as if there weren't another thousand names to choose from, but then I suppose that is why they are the most popular names.

Oscar is fine, a bit less widespread round here we know one and it suits him.

confusedperson · 24/02/2011 19:50

Ha ha, for our DS I loved Gregory, DH loved David, we went for Oscar in the end. I bet you will find a compromise name! Good luck.

LouMacca · 24/02/2011 20:13

Love Sam. Don't like Oscar at all.

Thanks everyone for your posts. I never thought that picking a name would be so hard :)
We said that if we can't agree on a name in the next couple of weeks we'll toss a coin :)
Not the best way to choose a name for your child but there you go :o

I like Oscar

BikeRunSki · 25/02/2011 10:45

I have a 2yo Sam. Well, Samuel for best (I wanted Sam short for Isambard as I am an engineer, but DH was a bit Hmm).

He is the only one of his age we have ever met. It is a fab name - well known, spellable, not at all remarkable (which is a good thing in my book), ageless, classless and seemingly not really that common. I know it drifts around Top 10-15, but not aroudn here.

OliveMalay · 25/02/2011 11:25

I prefer Sam. Not keen on Oscar.

flopsy1974 · 25/02/2011 13:30

I think Oscar is the kind of name that will date very quckly. Samuel shortened to Sam is pretty timeless and a lovley name. Gets my vote.

meandmybub · 25/02/2011 16:10

we couldn't decide on DS3, I liked Name1 and DH liked Name2 so we decided that if he came out with DH's hair colour then he would be Name2, otherwise he would be Name1 ... on the way to the hospital in the car DH said to me 'looking foward to meeting Name1' .... I was so touched that I nearly said no, let's call him Name2 - fortunately I stopped myself in time!

spottyock · 26/02/2011 22:48

I have an Oscar. I think it's a lovely name, suits all ages. I don't think Sam is a baby's name though. Toddler, yes. Baby, no.

sahara13 · 27/02/2011 21:22

Ive got one of each so think either would be great!

Not much help am I!!!?

lovemybabyboy · 05/03/2011 16:30

I also have an Oscar, before we decided on his name I wanted to name him Samuel but DH said no.
I think both are lovely names but cant imagine DS being a sam now!

Thanks for all your replies. We have decided to toss a coin if the LO is a boy :)
