From your list I like

Jean
Shirley
Rita
Prudence
Vera
Edna

Ephiny · 17/02/2011 11:28

Cordelia and Rowena are my favourites, none of the others really jump out at me. Hazel and Marjorie are maybe ok but really not keen on any of the others, they sound ugly or 'clunky' somehow to me, or old-lady-ish.

TabithaTwitchet · 17/02/2011 11:44

There are some quite "unfashionable" names on there Grin.
Do you think that is why you like them?

I personally like Mary, Gilda, Judith, Persephone, Thomasina and Ursula.

I suppose Beryl goes quite well with Pearl, although it is not to my personal taste.

Jean and Jane are a bit plain for me, as is Susan, but they are inoffensive.

Aworryingtrend · 17/02/2011 11:49

Are you planning on giving birth to a pensioner?!

Baby Miriam? Cool and hip teenage Morag or Vera? Really?

bambiandthumper · 17/02/2011 11:51

Augusta or Cordelia
The rest are awful

tomatoesontoast · 17/02/2011 14:46

baby miriam could be baby mimi
you'll all be eating your hats in a couple of years when all these names are in the top 10

OliveMalay · 18/02/2011 00:13

I like Angela, Daphne, Edna, Jane, Mary, Miriam, Rowena, Susan, Sybil.

babylann · 18/02/2011 00:23

Seems to me like someone thinks she's giving birth to a 91 year old lady Grin Some very old-fashioned names.

Cordelia
Daphne
Hazel
Jane
Sally

maybe.. Persephone. Only problem is, I remember being a young girl and saw the name Persephone soon after learning how to figure out how to pronounce something based on how it was phonetically spelled. "Percy-phone". Still have to say it in my mind's voice to remind myself of how it should be pronounced when I see it written.

babylann · 18/02/2011 00:23

Oh, I meant to say they were the names I liked:

Cordelia
Daphne
Hazel
Jane
Sally

tummytickler · 18/02/2011 09:27

Thanks for the opinions!
Hopefully one day she will be a 91 year old lady Grin
To be honest, when I named my dd Iris 10 years ago everybody went Hmm , so I am not so worried that you think they are old fashioned, we have just chosen names that we like.
I really don't understand why it matters if a name is 'unfashionable' they are still pretty to me.
I am going to try to get it down to 10 names I think - I can see this taking a long time Grin

Angela - no
Augusta - lovely but quite severe
Beryl - old lady and not in a good way
Clover - pretty
Cordelia - pretty
Daphne - old lady
Edna - ditto
Ernestine - too much a girl version of a boys' name
Ethel - no
Gertrude - no, no, no
Gilda - pretty but no nice nn - also a bit film noir
Gladys - no
Hazel - never really liked this name, makes me think of brown
Hilda - no
Jane - dull
Jean - dull and old lady
Judith - no
Marjorie - old lady
Marigold - would think 'cow'
Mary - pretty but boring
Mildred - no
Miriam - OK
Morag - no
Persephone - very pretty but quite posh and not so many nice nns
Prudence - nice in theory
Queenie - already a nn, very old lady
Rita - no
Roberta - as Ernestine
Rowena - prefer Rowan
Sally - nice, bit dull
Shirley - old lady
Sibyl / Sybil - old lady
Susan - Susannah is nicer imo
Thisbe - lovely but nn? I suppose Bea would be cute
Thomasina - as Ernestine and Roberta
Thora - no
Ursula - I know a little Ursula and this has actually grown on me because she is such a sweet little girl
Vera - no

Probably all a bit negative, my favourites are the mythology ones - also like Xanthe and Hera

My favourites from your list are Clover (love it, was going to use it if DC2 had been a girl), Hazel, Judith, Miriam, Persephone, Thisbe and Rowena. I always get put off Ursula because it means 'she-bear' although like the name itself.

I know a few Thomasinas and it always seems quite pretty. My mother is called Margery, which is a different spelling of Marjorie and I always prefer it a bit.

ConstanceFelicity · 18/02/2011 10:39

Angela- No

Augusta- No, makes me think of a Queen Victoria type.

Beryl- No no NO!

Clover- Pretty. I like it.

Cordelia- No. King Lear is far too sad.

Daphne- That woman off Neighbours in the 80s.

Edna- No

Ernestine- Oh dear me no

Ethel- No

Gertrude- Thomas Hardy's The Withered Arm.

Gilda- no

Gladys- no

Hazel- Lovely

Hilda- I LOVE this. Cool yet strong.

Jane- Gorgeous.

Jean- Beautiful and strong.

Judith- Pretty

Marjorie- No.

Marigold- Gloves

Mary- Pretty

Mildred- no

Miriam- Lovely

Morag- Reminds me of sheep

Persephone- Pretentious.

Prudence- No. What if she turns out not to be prudent?

Queenie-I think this is lovely for a child or older lady but not a woman.

Rita- Actually, Rita is cool.

Roberta- Nice

Rowena- Lovely.

Sally- Meh

Shirley- No

Sibyl / Sybil- I like this one too

Susan- no

Thisbe- Pretentious

Thomasina- No!

Thora- Hird

Ursula- Evil one from The Little Mermaid

Vera- No

Sorry about all the nos!

Sorry, was it me who said unfashionable Blush?
Of course it doesn't matter if you are far away from the prevailing taste consensus - you say the names are beautiful to you (although your child may not neccesarily thank you Grin).

I was just wondering if you liked them particularly because they were that sort of name, and therefore likely to be one of the only ones in their peer group, or if you would have liked them even if they were more mainstream?

babylann · 18/02/2011 14:19

No Tabitha, it was me :) But I was being light-hearted anyway. I don't think old-fashioned names should be discarded purely for being old-fashioned. I do, however, think old fashioned names such as the ones the OP chose are quite harsh sounding and occasionally a bit ugly. I couldn't imagine a little baby girl Mildred or Morag.

mummypontipine · 18/02/2011 16:36

do like persephone but it's meaning bringer of death put me off also with the recomissioning of upstairs downstairs could rapily rise in popularity

gladys i love

hilda if matild ,tilda are ok why not hilda

augusta nn gussie i love
also like miriam nice meaning longed for child ,mary and cordelia

prefer susannah to susan

the rest are either old ladyish or very middle aged eg ethei

morag a very harsh ugly souding name imo
