my daughters name is Skye.

she is 2.6,and when asked what her name is,she will reply:

"die"

normaly followed by a Shock face, the person will then open and close their moth like a fish several time's until i say...."her name is Skye"

Im getting rather sick of this.

she knows her full name and can say her MN well,if you call her by her MN she will respond.

is it totally mad of me to start phasing in her MN as her name ?

TIA

What?

Plonker · 16/02/2011 14:41

Do you still prefer the name Skye?

If so, then stick with it. She'll be able to pn it soon enough, and until then, just help her.

She's not the only little one to be unable to say their own name for a spell. I know my dd2 struggled.

Deciduousblonde · 16/02/2011 14:42

So you want to start calling her by her middle name because she can't say 'Skye'?

I guess you could...

JiltedJohnsJulie · 16/02/2011 14:43

Why would you want to call her by her Mumsnet name? Grin

Deciduousblonde · 16/02/2011 14:43

...but as Plonker says, I am sure she will start to be able to pronounce her name soon!

seeker · 16/02/2011 14:43

My ds called himself Matmick until he was about 3 - he got there in the end!

JiltedJohnsJulie · 16/02/2011 14:47

DD has only just started saying her full name and then she gets it a little wrong in the middle. It is a very long name though.

I wouldn't dream of calling her anything else though.

Don't change it just because she can't say it.

What does DP think?

FriggFRIGG · 16/02/2011 14:49

Grin at matmick...okay,i'll Grin and bare it then.

i dont think it'd be so bad if she was just mispronouncing but her shouting DIE! at people is a bit Blush

i should have thought about this 2.6 years ago before i said "okay, you can have the first name choice..."

Well it could always be Di as in nn for Diana its not like she's telling them to just go and DIE Grin for what its worth Skye is lovely and she will pronounce it right soon enough and it will be a funny story to tease her with when she's all big, dont care so much bout strangers!

FriggFRIGG · 16/02/2011 15:03

thanks,i hadnt though about diana!Grin

that does make it a little less Blush

Most 2.6 year olds can't pronounce their names properly, nobody will expect this of them Hmm.

Give her some time - I'm sure when she starts school she will be able to pronounce Skye properly.

FooffyShmoofer · 17/02/2011 14:00

My DD 2.5 has been telling anyone who asks her name is Baba even though she knows full well her name is Annabel and can actually say it beautifully.

and whoever introduced her to the word baba I will throttle.

FooffyShmoofer · 17/02/2011 14:01

Oh meant to add, she now tells them her proper name, she just did it in her own time.

agora1 · 17/02/2011 15:35

My daughter used to introduce herself as her sister's name coz it was easier to say!

It's perfectly normal at that age to have a problem with cluster sounds such as [sk]. She'll get there in the end. Definitely not worth changing her name over.

bambiandthumper · 17/02/2011 17:08

What is her middle name out of interest?

pongonperdy · 17/02/2011 17:37

My son is 2.6 and calls himself boy. He picks up the phone when playing and says hello boy speaking.

I wouldnt worry people willknow she isnt called die.

OliveMalay · 17/02/2011 17:55

Yes I was going to say Di as in Diana as well. She'll be able to call herself Skye soon enough. Just ignore the Shock faces and smile back :)

FriggFRIGG · 17/02/2011 18:10

her middle name is Matilda...she says Tilda

it sounds very sweet Smile

thanks for all the reassurance.Grin

DD1 called DD3 'Bowbie' and DS 'Blames' for quite a while! I think 'd' and 'b' sounds must be easier than 's'

FriggFRIGG · 17/02/2011 18:18

but she can say sarah sam she etc...seems to be struggling with sk ...Sad

she wiil grow out of it and if it's amy consolation it could be worse . my dn insisted when asked his name when he was between 3 and 4 that his name was Satan .his actual name was nathan my dsil was mortified . what amazed her was the number of people who would just say what an unusual name and leave it at that. she was just waiting for someone to add it really suits him ! he is now 10 and had grown out of it by the time he went to school .
