What do you think of Antigone?

I love the name Tiggy, but would like to christen daughter with a 'proper' full name rather than an obvious nickname. Are there any alternatives to Antigone, as although a strong and remarkabke character in Sophocles' story she was the product of an incestuous relationship and met a nasty death! Does the origin of a name matter?

Antigone bit difficult to spell, pronounce and not a nice story

How about Agatha nn Taggy? (or you could use Tiggy at a push)

WhensBedtime · 16/02/2011 13:41

The story of Antigone is so awful that it would really put me off the name.

petitdonkey · 16/02/2011 13:43

have a look here

GooseyLoosey · 16/02/2011 13:46

No from me too. How about Tabitha?

Pootles2010 · 16/02/2011 13:46

Sorry that is awful full name. It just makes me want to crack awful joke of 'where's she gone?' Very childish of me I know.

Says something about me that I want to crack childish jokes rather than knowing anything about Sophocles though so you may want to ignore me.

HtheH · 16/02/2011 13:50

It's not that awful is it? She was really a tragic hero who fought for what she truly believed in. Admirable qualities really? Or am i trying to convince myself?

Oh no, apart from the awful story and 'anti-gone' pronunciation, she might get called TiggyWinkle

Pootles2010 · 16/02/2011 13:53

I take your point, but do most ignorant people like me know that?

Subway · 16/02/2011 13:55

She's a feminist icon, isn't she? But it's quite a dark tale. I do like the sound of the word, though.

Tiggy is usually short for Elizabeth. Very old, traditional nickname. True story!

seeker · 16/02/2011 13:58

Please don;t condemn her to a life of "No, it's pronounced Anti-gone-ey. Yes, my mother was and Oxford Don, actulally, how did you guess? Oh, have you met my brother and sister, Caractacus and Boudicca?"

JaneS · 16/02/2011 14:02

She'll get called Aunty Gonie. Tabitha is lovely though, like that suggestion. I knew a Teresa who was Tiggy, too - but probably because we were 5 and she couldn't say it!

MackerelOfFact · 16/02/2011 14:07

I always have to say 'anti gone' in my head several times before I remember how it's pronounced. It doesn't look like a name really, more like a warning.

DesertOrchid · 16/02/2011 14:22

Antigone is my cat's name... The other one is Persephone...

I have posh cats :-)

Tiggy can be a shortening of Elizabeth, too.

amberleaf · 16/02/2011 14:25

Hideous-sorry.

Just call her Tiggy if thats the name you like.

MirandaGoshawk · 16/02/2011 14:25

No. It sounds like some sort of flea-spray or something. I love Tiggy though, and Tabitha.

womma · 16/02/2011 14:46

It's a bit, no, a lot poncey.

Take it from soemone with a 'different' name... people won't know how to pronounce it and she'll be fed up with it when she's older. Yes, I can see into the future.

tummytickler · 16/02/2011 14:50

I really like Antigone, it sounds charming. Put the story means it is a big no from me.

AppleyEverAfter · 16/02/2011 15:08

Too weird, sorry! Go with Tiggy if you like it, it's great.

I knew an Antigone who was shortened to Tiggy - I always thought it was a horrible name and wasn't Antigone murdered by being buried alive up to her head or something. That would always put me off.

zozzle · 16/02/2011 19:47

Sounds very posh, which would put me off TBH. Probably ok if you live in London and go to an elite public school though.

Hatterbox · 16/02/2011 21:04

I think Antigone is beautiful, utterly beautiful.

warthog · 16/02/2011 21:06

is lovely name but people won't get pronunciation right.

and it is very, very poncy.

so on that basis, no, i'm out.

mandy1978 · 16/02/2011 21:10

nope not liking at all...

not keen on tiggy either, all i can hear is aunty-gone and mrs tiggywinkle

tabitha and elizabeth are lovely, cant you think of a different name ad just use tiggy as a pet name?
