Matilda

Is is overly popular? DH loves it and I think I am coming round to it.

Way too early for this as we are still ttc but hey ho....

Reasonably popular and has been for the past 10 or more years. But not so fashionable that it will enable people to date your child's birth to within a 2-year period, iyswim.

You won't find five of them in every class, but it's certainly not unusual.

OliveMalay · 15/02/2011 22:44

It does seem pretty popular. I think it may seem this way because it was virtually unheard of a couple of decades ago.

TeacupTempest · 16/02/2011 13:13

Thanks for the responses.

hmmmmmmmmmm I was hoping to avoid anything too popular. Maybe need to keep searching then?

Plenty of time!

I know loads. Have a look at the ONS statistics from last year to see how many girls were named Matilda.

meditrina · 16/02/2011 13:19

Link to ONS stats for 2009: Matilda was in 46th place.

grubbalo · 16/02/2011 13:31

I know 3 little Matildas, but without exception they are known as Tilly. So if you're intending to actually call her the full version, then I think it would be still be fairly unusual even if the ONS suggests otherwise.

Does that even make sense? Sorry if it sounds garbled.

smother · 16/02/2011 14:23

I think Matilda sounds more popular than it is because it's similar to other popular names - like Madeline - and Tilly is also similar to other popular names like Milly and Lily.

I think it is a nice name and I adore the nn Tilda (rather than Tilly which I find a bit too frilly for my tastes)

tigerbear · 16/02/2011 14:27

I would def say it's becoming more popular and IMO, it's set to become the new Grace/Evie/Amelie type of name.

BarbieLovesKen · 16/02/2011 14:29

Depends where you are. Im in Ireland and I've never met one/ heard of one/ its not on the stats.

Its gorgeous by the way Smile

Deciduousblonde · 16/02/2011 14:39

I don't know any Matildas!

Therefore, it's not too 'poular' in my book..but popularity doesn't mean that much to me anyway, as long as you like the name. My 15 year old is caled Evie, which was practically unheard of back then.

Now look at it Grin

Deciduousblonde · 16/02/2011 14:39

popular

ShowOfHands · 16/02/2011 14:42

It's actually started to drop down the charts again. And I agree that it's the Milly, Tilly names that make it seem more popular than it is.

I've got one though she's Tilda or her full name (never, ever Tilly, it's twee as a twee thing on twee day). I've not met any others locally and certainly no other Tildas.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 16/02/2011 14:45

Only know one Matilda and she is called by her full name. Do know a few Millys and Tillys though but they are named that, not Matilda. Really like the name and don't think it is too popular at all. There isn't a single one at DS school (200+) or at DD nursery.

Good luck with TTC.

bucaneve · 16/02/2011 16:20

I only know one, aged about 5.

I think it's a lovely name.

TeacupTempest · 16/02/2011 18:15

Thanks for all the replies.

It would definitely be Matilda or Tilda I think as we used to have a cat called Tilly!! Also my Mum's dog is called Milly so that could get confusing!

Its ok I guess - but not overly keen! I've come across a few recently.

I really don't like the nn Tilly - horribly frilly IMO. Even worse is Tilly as the full name. Quite like Tilda though.

Iwantscallops · 17/02/2011 14:09

I love it, and have never come across a Matilda here.

I agree on nn Tilda - it sounds lovely.

cumbria81 · 17/02/2011 14:10

Matilda is a nice name but Tilly is beyond awful

flopsy1974 · 17/02/2011 16:32

I don't know any. There seems to be a few little Maddie's where I live though.

Rhubarbgarden · 17/02/2011 18:56

Two in my NCT group, both nn Tilly. Very popular round here.

Hulababy · 17/02/2011 18:57

I love the name and don't actually know any children with the name. None in DD's primary school and none in the infant school I work at (approx 200+ girls in total).

bringbackaqualibra · 17/02/2011 19:41

I know 3 under 5... Nice name though - love the Dahl book :)

Elsjas · 18/02/2011 09:46

I know quite a few girls under 7 called Matilda, Milly or Tilly. I would say that it is one of the more popular names in dc's school.

Whelk · 18/02/2011 17:35

I know 5. It's probably the most popular girls name around here at the moment. I still like it though.Smile

TeacupTempest · 18/02/2011 17:50

Ok I really do like it but I think its a lot more popular than we were hoping....

Will keep thinking
