We are going round in circles and would really appreciate opinions on our ever changing shortlist. We have a boys name, but cannot find a girls name that we both like. I am totally fed up of stressing about this as not much time left (maybe hours, days at the most!) I know we could leave the decision till after the birth but I am worried that we will waste even more time then, and would love to just focus on our new addition and easing the transition for DD1.

Anyway, our rules, or preferences are:

  • not traditional as would not go with DD1 name
  • ideally two syllables as want to avoid shortening if possible
  • not too popular, definitely not top 20 (For info, DD1 name greater than 400 in charts and although not an unusual name, I have yet to meet a child with the same name. I really like this, but we are open to a slightly more popular name this time)

Shortlist (but please make suggestions too as changes daily)

  • Erin (how popular is this? I don't know any, but nat statistics suggest there are lots of little Erins out there?)

  • Georgia (a new addition today, again concerned about popularity)

  • Seren (DP likes this, but neither of us are even 100% sure on how to pronounce it!)

  • Thea (read positive comments on here about this name, but DP not convinced)

Please help!

Not sure how popular Erin is. The ones I know are all late twenties early thirties. Strong sounding name but personally I don't see it suiting a baby.

Georgia is lovely. Again, not sure on popularity for little ones but know several teenage Georgias.

Not a fan of Seren.

Thea is my favourite from the list. Not too common and will work for a baby and as she gets older.

Other names that spring to mind:

Martha
Emma
Gemma
Alice
Carla
Inga
Laura
Orla

  • Erin - nice, and I don't know any in RL either

  • Georgia - OK (prefer Georgina, but that fails syllable test)

  • Seren - if you're not sure of pronunciation, will you ever be securely happy with it?

  • Thea - lovely, but spectacularly fails the "non-traditional" test, being a name from the Greek myths, and also an early Christian saint.

AnnOnimous · 14/02/2011 08:57

Erin - lovely, but not rare or unusual in my opinion, only know one though
Georgia - mmmm, know one who is stroppy, so not too sure about it lol, but it is a nice name.
Seren - if it is pronouncen Se (like said) ren like rin, then I think it is lovely.
Thea, sorry, don't like.

How about Mirrin, Briony, Orla, Jenna or Mackie?

How do you pronounce 'Thea'? I have always wondered if it is "Thee-ah" or Tee-ah".

Love the name Erin.

Seren is a Welsh name, meaning star - very popular here in Wales (obviously)

Pronounced Se - rin
(the Welsh also do the lovely rolling of their rrr's when they say it)

Hedwig3 · 14/02/2011 13:55

From your list I like Erin best (I don't know any)

How about...

Ceren
Rosa
Una
Lara
Juno

agora1 · 14/02/2011 14:00

Meant to say Catrin also.

From your list my preference would be Erin, I only know one.

MarniesMummy · 14/02/2011 14:10

Georgia, Erin and Thea are all popular where I live.
I listed them in order of poularity of small children (7 and younger that I know), just to give you an idea, I know 3 Thea's.

Would Seren be constantly mis-spelt? (Very annoying, my actual name is one that is constantly mis-spelt (despite it being a name that everyone has heard of) and I still am irritated every time it happens!)

Would you like us to suggest names? You weren't clear if you just wanted us to offer opinions on the four you've listed.

Glamour · 14/02/2011 14:11

i love erin! not popular at all where i live so when i hear it i always think how lovely it is!

SlightlyTubbyHali · 14/02/2011 14:12

I like Seren. I have a feeling it's a boy's name really but I like it for a girl (also Marin if you are so inclined. Go on, pick Marin - I'd love to name a MN baby...).

Erin is on the up, I think.

Georgia is a bit meh for me.

WriterofDreams · 14/02/2011 14:18
