What do you think of Conor?

I know it's popular in Ireland but how popular is it in the UK (or Connor/Conner)??

I want something Irish to reflect my roots but something that will also go with DHs surname Edwards (trouble is my numerous siblings have already chosen all the really nice names for their DC)??

Thoughts anyone??

Nice name, except if he might go to French school, mix with French children in any way, or might one day live in France.

naughty kids name list has it as number 2. I associate it with conmen. I know about 10 but obviously its not as common amongst non Catholics.

Not Catholic as such but lots of dcs at Catholic schools are of Irish decent which is why I know so many. There are 4 in one class in dcs school which might put people off choosing it.

I like the irish spelling, but it does make things a bit hard in England.

It should be noted though that the literacy rates among all my Irish ancestors was so low that our family has several spellings of their family name (and first names for that matter). So the purists about 'Conor' and 'Rhys' (and for that matter Shelagh etc) should agree to disagree before the Irish get pissed off with them.

Nice name, btw.

Conner looks like the vocabulary word for someone who scams others; so I'd definitely avoid that one.

Chaotica · 11/02/2011 19:58

Madamdeathstare - did you not just give him one of your looks?

I like it, but it does make me think of 'Highlander' - THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE!!!!

muminthemiddle · 11/02/2011 22:00

I have to agree with the naughty boy association, sorry.

Chaotica · 11/02/2011 23:43

LOL Madamdeathstare

What is it with this naughty boy thing?

Ballynarry · 13/02/2011 15:54

Well thanks for the comments - even some of the more bizarre ones!!

If we decide to do with it I would definitely use the original spelling of Conor but with 8 weeks or so to go we haven't made up our minds.

If it's a girl we are in big trouble - even less idea there!! Confused

I haven't read the replies yet, but as I'm in Ireland it's a bit of a Jack name right now. It's not saying anything to me.

Solid and classic though. Can't go wrong really.

If you use it please spell it conor. Anything else looks wrong. Especially ConnER. Like a fraudster!?

HeartShapedValiumSandwich · 13/02/2011 18:57

ps MrsAlanKey, I'm not Catholic but I am Irish. I had names like Diarmuid and Clodagh and Maeve in mind. Irish does not automatically equal Catholic and Catholic doesn't automatically mean Irish either.

Our nephew is Conor and is Welsh. I think it's lovely. This song might convince you...
