do you think of the song 'who the *£!& is alice' or is that just me?

Alice seems to be the only name DH and I agree on at the minute (and LO due any day soon). Alice in Wonderland connotations I can take; who the bleep is alice I can't Shock

i wanted to call my dd alice but my mother kept going on about how my gran (her mil) was called alice and they used to call her slack alice - she was lovely though.

TallulahDoesTheHula · 10/02/2011 10:21

First thing I thought of was the song too, sorry

Pterosaur · 10/02/2011 10:32

I know two girls called Alice (13 & 8) and they both happen to have good brains and big personalities, so I guess that's what I'd associate with it. I'm pretty sure they've never had any stick because of their name.

To be honest, you could choose any name and it could gather associations, unfortunate or otherwise, at any time - there must have been loads of blokes called Peter Sutcliffe living perfectly happy lives before the mid-80s.

And can you imagine being a Harry Potter born in, say, 1996?

apples82 · 10/02/2011 10:47

I think Alice is beautifully simple name, elegant.

I don't think of the song at all, and the Alice in Wonderland connection everyone will have, but that's not a bad thing.

claustrophobicclown · 10/02/2011 11:01

I think of my lovely niece. And she is the only reason I am not considering it for a dd. I think it's a lovely, classical name.

flopsy1974 · 10/02/2011 15:01

Alice is DD's middle name. I think it's a really pretty name. Not too popular atm either. I would go for it.

It's the best name Grin

slowangels1 · 10/02/2011 15:25

Grin to aliceworld :)

pterosaur you have good thinking re: names and can't tell what will happen in the future with them.

bt1978 good to hear you like alice and it's your name - it must be really annoying if you hate your name in adulthood (I have an old fashioned name and hated it when I was little but love it now).

I'm also an Alice and I agree it's the best name! I like that it's a bit old fashioned and you don't come across many.

Alice in Wonderland used to wind me up when I was little but I'm over it now, Alice the Camel I'd forgotten about til this thread (which just shows the impact) and that song was unbelievably annoying at the time but seems to have been forgotten...

cowboylover · 10/02/2011 18:07

I have never heard of Alice the camel but as others have said it might be an age thing so that why I thought of Twilight instead.

The Alice I know from school and the Alice in the film was a friendly, arty person who you would want as your friend!

sharbie · 10/02/2011 18:09

i have a dd alice 13 - never heard anyone say about the song

Figgyrolls · 10/02/2011 18:11

I immediately think of this song/poem and nothing else! It is one of my favs!

kittya · 10/02/2011 18:56

All the Alices I have come accross have been very arty and confident. I adore it.

Slack Alice? I havent heard that for years! what does it mean? I remember my granny sayings "shes a right slack Alice" Hysterical.

I've never even heard the term slack alice before

It makes me think of the lovely adorable little Alice I know.

It's a really pretty, simple name. I like it. Only thing that would put me off is that I can't help reading it as 'a lice'. But that's just me, I'm weird, and 'a lice' isn't even grammatically correct, it'd be 'a louse' wouldn't it? Yeah, ignore me.

Rockmaiden · 11/02/2011 09:37

I have a close friend called Alice and she does get asked 'who the is Alice' a lot but I do think it's a generation thing and any new Alice's would be fairly safe from it.

cumbria81 · 11/02/2011 11:34

I do think of the song but agree it's a generational thing and unlikely to be a problem.

well, the nursery is painted blue (with some white walls too) and the blue colour looks alot like the shade of alices dress from th books, so we could say it was painted alice blue to her Wink 1944

I am also called Alice and whilst I was growing up the camel song and the who the f* song did make unwelcome appearances in the school playground, but that was years ago and no-one remembers now (except other Alices, probably scarred for life). As far as popularity goes, I think it really depends where you are. My mum named me after her grandmother 32 years ago thinking it was very unusual only for me to spend the whole of primary school with another Alice in my class. We then moved from the South East to the North West where there were no other Alices and now I'm in the South West I haven't met any (though I don't hang out with babies/toddlers at the moment. All change soon). I used to dislike my name but now I really like it and I think it ages well.

lol at story 1944 - we have a family story a bit like that - my mum and dad said I could have the important job of picking my sisters middle name. I kept coming up with ideas that I thought were great (like kylie after kylie minogue) and think my parents were tearing their hair out with my bad choices. Finally I said 'what about april like the character from the ninja turtles?' and mum and dad jumped on that as she had a cs booked for last day in april.

M&D tell the story that her middle name is april as she was born on the last day of april but I know the real truth Wink
