If I was brave I'd love to call DC if a DS...Wilf, Rafe or Kit...?!?!?

But DH isn't keen on Wilf or Rafe...any other suggestions??

Otherwise DS will be a James or Thomas (which are good names, but I really really want to be brave Wink)

'Fraid I don't like either Wilf or Rafe (all the Rafes I know spell their names Ralph and say things like "Oh no, it's pronounced the Norman way". Annoying.)

But Kit is lovely. How about Christopher, nn Kit? That way your husband is happy (with a nice traditional name) and you're happy (with a lovely everyday name).

Highlandgirl · 08/02/2011 21:37

I think Rafe should be Rafe!!!

Not keen on Christopher!

Love Ralph or Rafe as well as Kit. Not that keen on Wilf.

ghosteditor · 08/02/2011 22:36

Love Kit, although I'm one of those people who likes to see a longer formal name so it would be Christopher shortened to Kit.

Having said that I really like 'Kit' for a girl, but it's only one letter away from my name which is in turn only one letter away from FIL's name so it might all be getting a bit same-y.

QuestionNumber · 08/02/2011 22:41

Kit = P.E. kit, sounds like a nickname for Catherine or a cat's name

Wilf - old fashioned

Rafe - pretentious because of the Ralph/Rafe thing

James - like, classic name

Thomas - OK, a bit dull

Not sure what to suggest along similar lines but looks like you need a middle ground between the classic perennials and the trendy-old. Hopefully others will have good suggestions! How about

Henry
Oliver
Nathaniel/Nate
Frederick/Fred
Max
William/Will (nicer alternative to Wilf IMO)
Alexander/Alex
Edward
Tristan/Tris
Jacob/Jake
Elliot
Samuel/Sam
Elias/Eli

ReadyFreddie · 08/02/2011 22:43

Wilf is awful. Try-hard trendy name.

Rafe is just as bad.

Kit is great!

OnEdge · 08/02/2011 22:44

Love all three very much. You got good taste !!

Kit, short for Christopher, unusual but not daft.

Wilf = King

Rafe - classy

All of these were on my short list, we ended up calling him Rufus.

OnEdge · 08/02/2011 22:47

Be brave, I was a bit scared with Rufus but I just did it and now everyone loves it and I am really glad I did it. Go with your gut instincts, also see who he is when he pops out. Rufus was Jude for a couple of hours but he was just a Rufus, Jude wasn't right somehow when we met him.

LoopyLoopsPoopaScoop · 08/02/2011 22:48

Awful, awful and awful I'm afraid is my opinion. :)

ReadyFreddie · 08/02/2011 22:50

Rufus is everywhere in London at the moment! Most of them are red-headed. is yours OnEdge?

freya2010 · 08/02/2011 22:59

Don't like any of those I'm afraid, is Kit even a real name??

K1t · 08/02/2011 23:01

I'm female and I'm a Kit not shortened for anything either.

OnEdge · 08/02/2011 23:20

No Ready

My Dad really got on my tits when we said he was called Rufus. He said everytime it was mentioned that Rufus means red head.

Actually, people often say that the famous King Rufus was a red head, but he was nicknamed Rufus because he had a ruddy complexion.

To be honest, I called him Rufus because I bloomin fancy the pants off Rufus Sewell Blush

OnEdge · 08/02/2011 23:22

Kit is a family name for us, was my great Grandad, I love it.

MelinaM · 09/02/2011 01:32

I love Wilf and Rafe, Kit is fab too! x

Glamour · 09/02/2011 08:27

gosh very posh names! Grin i cant say i like any of them, i think there waful actually!

Glamour · 09/02/2011 08:28

waful -awful! Smile

Highlandgirl · 09/02/2011 12:53

This is good, honest comments. Thank you all! Smile We have a long surname so I was looking for a DS name which was quite 'punchy. Oddly it's okay for DD to have long names but with DS it just sounds odd.

QuestionNumber Thank you for your suggestions. My DH thinks Rafe is pretentious too.

Henry - DH suggested this last night, as he's 35 and Henry was number 35 in the English rankings..
Oliver - An Ex
Nathaniel/Nate - Mmm not keen
Frederick/Fred - Live in London and LOADS of them, but I do like the name.
Max - Only person DH has ever punch in the face. He was 12 and still hate's the name!
William/Will (nicer alternative to Wilf IMO)- doesn't work with our surname.
Alexander/Alex - Like
Edward - LOVE very annoying as it's DH's name
Tristan/Tris - LOVE on the list - but not sure it works with our surname either!
Jacob/Jake - No
Elliot - No
Samuel/Sam - May
Elias/Eli - Errr horrid.

OhEdge I'm longing to be brave...will try. Rufus Sewell is HOT!!! Yum...might need to dig out Cold Comfort Farm Grin

Glamour ..well I'm sure most people would think I'm posh, but really I just speak properly (hahaha) Grin

Love your DH's logic for choosing Henry from the rankings numbers!

I like Rufus too.

Glamour · 09/02/2011 13:53

i like Tristan and Henry Smile

MelinaM · 09/02/2011 13:58

Rufus and Henry are lovely too! Love Edward, how about using it as a middle name? x

Pixipie · 09/02/2011 14:24

I love Henry & Edward although really don't like Eddie and there is always a danger he would end up being called Eddie at school. I am due with DS2 in April and DH and I just can't agree on a name. I like the following names but DH has an objection to every one:

Noah (DH - "too biblical")
Milo (no specific objection, just no!)
Jack ("too Mockney")
Henry ("too posh-boy")
Kit (I want it short for Christopher but DH doesn't like Christopher)

The only name we both like is Rafferty - nn Raffy or Raff - but not sure we are brave enough!

AllieW · 09/02/2011 15:04

I've suggested this before to another Mumsnetter who wanted Kit, but Kester is the medieval version of Christopher so you could have that as the formal name with a nn of Kit. I think it's lovely. Also really like Wilf (if short for Wilfrid/Wilfred).

Highlandgirl · 10/02/2011 16:21

I think DH might lead towards more (sadly) Thomas, Henry, James etc etc..!
I think it would be quite funny to name DS, Henry and then tell him years later, Fathers logic Grin

I love Tristan Glamour and DH doesn't dislike it, however with your surname it's quite a month full. Plenty of people has said it's a bit fluffy!!

Pixipie My DH also vetod, Noah and Milo..!!Not so keen on Jack, but it is a good name. Quite like Rafferty ask Raff..
What's DS1 called??

Allie Really dislike Kester..school days..naff said!!

OP posts:
Pixipie · 10/02/2011 16:24

DS1 is Barney (short for Barnaby) which I JUST LOVE!!! I don't feel any name can beat it!
