DH is the 7th generation in his family with the same first and middle name and is insisting that we call our first son the same. DH is from South Africa and his family are very traditional. How do i tell him that i dont like his choice without causing a war!! HELP!

Tell him he can have the name as the third and fourth middle names.

What is the name btw?

babybritjo · 07/02/2011 18:06

That is a good idea!

Well, DH and previous ancestors are called Hendrik Lodewyk and he wants to call our DS Junior for short... The name is great for an adult or if you are growing up in south africa but we are in uk and will be bringing baby up here...school kids can be cruel!!

i actually really like hendrick! i think its a great name!

babybritjo · 07/02/2011 18:16

I like the name too, for my husband, i just picture a cuter name for a kid...any ideas for a nickname then!!!

I quite like Hendrik too but having the same name as your Dad and being called Junior instead is odd I think. In the UK anyway.

Usually if a boy has the same first name as his Dad he would then be called by his middle name but I don't think you want your son to be called Lodewyk.

So I'd suggest either calling him Hendrik xxx Lodewyk, and using xxx as his everyday name, or calling him Rick for short.

babybritjo · 07/02/2011 18:28

Ah, another good idea!!
Im sure we can make a compromise with that one!
I'd better get thinking....

If you really really don't like those names why not tell him it's time to start your own tradition?

belgo · 07/02/2011 18:49

I know a Hendrick and a baby Lode in Belgium - they are coming back into fashion!

Lodewijk/Ludovik is a great name.

But you cannot have the names as first names if you do not like them - you have to be firm that you have to like the name as well.

DesertOrchid · 07/02/2011 18:54

I think Hendrick is great - you could call him Henry or Hendry or Rik for short. I agree, move the middle name along a space - and everyone should be happy!

babybritjo · 07/02/2011 18:56

Ok. im coming round to the idea now, there are lots of options coming to light!!

I know an Eric, short for Hendrik.

MelinaM · 07/02/2011 19:22

I think honesty is the best policy in a situation like this! I rather like the name Hendrik, you could always use Henry as a nn?! x

RueLaChesty · 07/02/2011 19:57

i knew a hendry, i quite like that!

But i agree you have to like the name otherwise its back to the drawing board.

JojoMags · 07/02/2011 20:08

What about Hal or Harry as nn for Hendrik? Both are short for Henry, which I assume is the english version. I really like Hendrik and Hendry btw Smile.

blueberryboybaitonSafari · 07/02/2011 20:16

We had a similar thing with my cousin and her baby - all the 1st born boys in his family (also South African) are called Dirk Johan, she has 4 nephews called this and refused to call their son it but used Johan as one of his middle names.

I like Hendrik nn. Hennie or Harry.

Sarsaparilllla · 07/02/2011 21:19

I like Hendrick, and like folks have already said, loads of nn you could use when he's little, so he doesn't need to just be Junior :)

Sarsaparilllla · 07/02/2011 21:23

Meant to add, or he could be Ricky for short as well?

mannicmummyhavinaiccy · 09/02/2011 11:04

I would use Henni as nn (I think its very cute)when he could use Hendrick when he feels he has out grown his nn,Hendrick is very nice, quite distinguised :)

MackerelOfFact · 09/02/2011 11:31

Really like Hendrik. Agree that it's confusing to have a father and son with the same name though (especially with post etc) and Junior is horrible. Agree with the Henkdrik XXX Lodewyk suggestion, with the middle name or a nickname used for the baby.

And you might picture a 'cuter name for a kid' but your baby will be an adult one day too. Never pick a name for a baby, pick one for a person.

FlingonTheValiant · 09/02/2011 13:02

I really like the name Rick, so I think Hendrik is fine.

As for Lodewyk, well when will he ever use his middle name?

To be honest, when all the other children at school are called Oliver James type names he might be super proud of his unusual names.

Also, he might wonder why his daddy didn't think he was good enough to inherit the names after 7 generations. No matter how often you explain why you made the decision he might not believe you (I have a friend whose mother objected to a family name, and he's still upset about it).

Acanthus · 09/02/2011 13:03

Can you anglicise it to Henry Ludovic?
