Which of these two spellings is the female version of this name - Sasha or Sacha? My daughter is considering it for her baby?

Urm both. I went to school with a Russian guy called Sasha but I have a female friend who spells it Sacha.

I think it's down to the origin.

onimolap · 05/02/2011 19:15

Both are used for boys.

I don't know if both are also in use for girls.

onimolap · 05/02/2011 19:17

Sacha Distel was definitely a bloke! I've noted that Sasha is a preferred spelling for boys when transliterating from Cyrillic.

Both Sacha and Sasha can be used for either sex, originating from Russia it is a diminutive form of Alexander.

Sacha Baren Cohen is a male comedian.

I have also seen it spelt Sascha which if I saw written down I would think was a girl.

Sacha is the French spelling
Sascha is the German spelling
Sasha is the English spelling

see here (from Wikipedia):

"Sasha originated in countries of Central, Eastern and Southern Europe as a diminutive of Alexander and Alexandra. It is also found as a surname, although this is very rare. Alternative spellings include: Саше (Macedonian), Sasa (Slovenian, Serbian, Croatian, Czech, Slovak, Lithuanian), Sasza (Polish), Sashko (Ukrainian), Sascha (German), Sasja (Dutch), and Sacha (French).

This name is especially common in Europe where it is used primarily by males as a diminutive of Alexander. Despite its popularity in informal usage, the name is rarely recorded on birth certificates in countries such as Russia, Ukraine, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia, as it is considered a diminutive and not a formal name. Exceptions are Serbia and Croatia.

In Germany, the civil registry offices allow the inscription of Sascha in birth certificates as a formal name but only for boys."

Yes, the difference in spelling is simply down to the origin. In French the 'ch' is pronounced as 'sh' (e.g. chat, chateau), so Sacha is the French version of Sasha. In Germany the sound 'sh' is written as 'sch' so it is Sascha in German.

In any case it is usually a boys' name and often a nickname for Alexander.

ValiumSandwichTime · 05/02/2011 22:07

I would expect a Sasha to be a girl and I'd expect a Sacha to be a boy.

ValiumSandwichTime · 05/02/2011 22:08

ps Barack Obama's daughter is called Sasha and I'm pretty sure it's Sasha with an s.

Nightstar · 05/02/2011 22:13

I agree with Valium

evamummy · 06/02/2011 16:37

Barack Obama's daugther is Natasha, often called Sasha as a nickname.

othersideofchannel · 06/02/2011 16:41

Sascha is the German variant of Sasha, which is a Russian pet form of lexander/Aleksandr. Sacha is the French form of Sasha.

othersideofchannel · 06/02/2011 16:42

sorry, Alexander

cowboylover · 06/02/2011 19:20

I agree I would expect a Sasha to be a girl and I'd expect a Sacha to be a boy if I read it.

Hulababy · 06/02/2011 19:20

I wouls have thought Sasha was the feminine form and Sacha the masculine form.

bigbluebump · 06/02/2011 20:55

It has NOTHING to do with gender. It depends on the country in which Sasha is used.

We have Serbian friends whose ds is called Sasha. It is commonly spelt Sasha in Eastern European countries.

In Germany it is Sascha (and only allowed for boys), whereas in France it is spelt Sacha (because of the way the French pronounce the 'ch').

I prefer Sasha because you can shorten to Sash.
