Gus?

We have pretty much decided to call our first DS Gus. We are considering full names of either Angus or Fergus (I prefer Angus, DH prefers Fergus), but could also just be Gus. We have a long Spanish surname beginning with San and that we have to spell out every time we say it! We are both also very sure we do not want a very Spanish name. What do you all think?

I really like Gus. MUCH prefer Angus as the full name.

Personally would have a long name and shorten. Then DS can choose to go all formal later in life if he wants?

However really short names with really long surnames often sound better, so without knowing the surname it's hard to say IYSWIM.

I like Angus and Augustus but not really Fergus. I do really like Gus as a nn though.

onimolap · 05/02/2011 08:50

I like it. I would assume Gus was short for Augustus (a lovely Wodehouse name!)

We have an Angus - we don't call him Gus yet (it's what we call our cat).

Not sure if I can think of any other names with Gus in.

I think Gus is lovely on its own.

Agustín?

I prefer Fergus to Angus

mamma2boyz · 05/02/2011 09:18

I love Gus, know a little 3 month old who is just Gus, and it really suits him. Really sweet.

Angus or Fergus both lovely in my opinion, but just Gus is fine if you can put up with everyone asking what it is short for!!!!

Angus is nicer than Fergus and is easier for any Spanish relatives to pronounce.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 05/02/2011 17:49

Gustavo?

BarbieLovesKen · 05/02/2011 17:59

Love Gus. I only have heard of one. Its perfect on its own. I dont like Angus or Fergus to be honest.

SilkStalkings · 05/02/2011 18:16

But Spanish people would pronounce it GooseHmm.

SlightlyTubbyHali · 05/02/2011 18:30

I like Gus. If I used it it would be short for August, which I love.

collision · 05/02/2011 19:16

Augustus is cool but love Angus too.

Love love love Gus.

BarbieLovesKen · 05/02/2011 19:26

Hmm I really love this - can Gus be used on its own or does it have to be short for something, I wonder?

MelinaM · 05/02/2011 22:57

Love the name GusSmile I think I'd go with Augustus or Augustin as a longer form. x

BooBooGlass · 05/02/2011 22:59

Gus is the fat little mouse in Cinderella

LittlePushka · 05/02/2011 23:03

I want to school with a Gus. He was Gusset for years. On the plus side, school is only a fifth of the boys' lifetime Wink

greedychops · 06/02/2011 12:20

I have an Angus and it's a great name. Would definitely choose one of the longer names, then call him Gus, and then he has the option to lengthen it if he wants.

Rhubarbgarden · 06/02/2011 16:59

If I have a ds he will be Gus. I think it's a great name, and stands alone perfectly well.

Glamour · 06/02/2011 17:30

my grandads name Smile

SilkStalkings · 06/02/2011 19:18

Good theoretically be short for Austin, seeing as that's short for Augustin.

bex2011 · 07/02/2011 13:53

Thanks for all your comments. I think we will stick with Gus on its own. My mum gave all of us 'choice' with our names and we all say we wished she didn't, but when it comes to making a decision that could affect someone for their whole life, its a lot of pressure (especially with hormones etc causing doubt).
