Hi
Already posted a list once and got some helpful commnets-thanks.However with 7 weeks to go I´m going round in circles.
Porblem is -I´m English, husband German living in Germany.Have a horrendously long unpronouncable to most, German surname -Sulzbacher so looking for a "bilingual " first name . Any comments welcome .Our little boy is 17 months-Magnus William ( scandinavian/Scottish/german)
so here's the shortlist of baby names I'm considering that I generated with Mumsnet's Baby Name Finder. Let me know what you think.

Girls

Bryony
Constance
Cordelia
Effie
Eleni
Elodie
Elsa
Emmi
Evangeline
Genevieve
Leonie
Livia
Magda
Marlena
Natalie
Ronja
Thea
Vivienne

That's a very nice list - I actually like most of them. If I were to pick three, I'd say Livia, Vivienne (think Vivi is lovely) and Magda (Maggie is adorable). Although thinking about it would Magnus and Magda be a bit much?! In which case my third choice would be Thea.

deliakate · 03/02/2011 13:47

Emmi is my fave from that list. Bryony does not go at all. Second choice would be Natalie.

Helzapoppin · 03/02/2011 13:47

I like Leonie- traditional but a little but different. Livia is lovely too. I went to school with a Livia- parents were both classicists!

Beatrice is on our shortlist....but there were three at toddler group this morning!!
I like Constance too (name of DH's great grandmother) but DH says it's a 'fat girl's name!'.

Helzapoppin · 03/02/2011 13:48

PS- I think that Germans would definitely have problems with saying Beatrice anything like it's said here!

DrEmJ · 03/02/2011 14:24

Yeh they pronounce it BEE AHHH TRICE ... should give up on it but just in mourning because i like it! Thanks for advice so far ..Yeh wasn´t sure myself about Magnus and Magda , is Magnus and Maggie any better? Next problem is my sister called her second girl Olivia..but then nick named her VIVI so definately couldn´t use that nickname for Vivienne:(. Men are funny about girls names ..they bizarrely seem to hold v v strong opinions usually negative to anything you suggest! Wasn´t sure about bryony because its meaning is pants ( thorn bush or something like that) What responsibility we mothers have for our future childrens´ happiness!!stress!X

I think Elsa is lovely - very simple, definitely works in English/England and the one downside (IMHO and from an English perspective..) is that it sounds a little bit German so perfect for a English/German family Grin

Secretwishescometrue · 03/02/2011 15:22

Love Elodie!

telsa · 03/02/2011 15:27

Vivienne and Magda are great. Love Marlene - nn Leni (spelt the German way, but I guess that could lead to pronounciation differences). Have you thought about Cosima - so pretty and bilingual.

fifi25 · 03/02/2011 16:05

wahwahwah · 10/02/2011 15:00

Is the baby definately a girl then? I know a german Iris, Christina, Catya, Beatrice, Heidi (yes really), Biergit (I think that's Bridgit), Heike, Anna.

growing3rdbump · 10/02/2011 20:21

Christmasbelle · 10/02/2011 23:40

Beatrice for me Smile

Christmasbelle · 10/02/2011 23:40

oh and Constance Wink

mathanxiety · 11/02/2011 04:12

Beatrice - Beautiful
Bryony - lovely and a bit on the hippy/ arty side too
Constance - beautiful but I really dislike Connie as a nn
Cordelia - lovely, makes me think Brideshead Revisited
Effie - sounds like a curse under the breath, and also a milkmaid's name
Eleni - lovely, very Greek
Elodie - sounds truncated, as if it should be Melody
Elsa - lovely, Germanic, would be very nice with Magnus
Emmi - too nicknamey. Would you use Emma or Emmeline on the BC?
Evangeline - too much. Angeline is nice. Evangeline is like a conglomeration of two long names.
Genevieve - nice but a bit frilly
Leonie - lovely and unusual
Livia - lovely, less popular than Olivia
Magda - beautiful, Germanic, and would be very nice with Magnus
Marlena - lovely if pronounced the German way and even spelled Marlene, also great with Magnus
Natalie - nice but I prefer Natalia
Ronja - not sure; too like naming a girl after a male relative called Ron
Thea - nice but a bit wispy
Vivienne - very nice

I like Elsa, Magda, Marlena/ Marlene and Leonie, Beatrice, Bryony, Constance, Vivienne and Cordelia.

mathanxiety · 11/02/2011 04:12

And Livia and Eleni.
