If you name a child something like 'Charlotte' and have a surname that starts with a hard consonent does the 't' get dropped a lot?

Our surname starts with 'D'
DH very dubious about names that end in 't' sound as he thinks the t will get dropped as its hard work to say it clearly and then move on to the D sound straight away.

What do we think?

He is worried that other people will say it wrong, not us - we speak properly too Grin

Do other people drop the t in your name? or dont you really notice?

I think your DH could well be right. May not be an issue if she gets called by a common nickname, though. For example, my F-i-L is called Robert which is difficult to say with our surname. However, he is always known as Bob, which flows much more easily. Furthermore, your Charlotte may not have your surname forever - she may decide to take her husband's surname should she marry. So I think it's less of problem for a girl in any case.

I guess I don't speak properly because I'm afraid I would drop the t in those circumstances. Sorry!

Hedwig3 · 01/02/2011 14:25

I think it will happen whatever your surname is I'm afraid. Some people just do not acknowledge the letter t!

hulabula · 01/02/2011 14:34

I think it is problematic when the last sound of the first name is the same as the first sound of the last name

e.g. Mike Comer, Finn Newman, Jas Summer, etc. I'd avoid Charlotte Dxx for that reason.

PlanetLizard · 01/02/2011 17:37

Yes I think people will drop the t. It would be quite awkward to say the t followed by the d.

charlotteolivia · 01/02/2011 17:42

My surname starts with a D. As you can see from my name... My first is Charlotte!
Yes if I'm at the doctors and they call out my name it does sound a bit like 'Charlud'
However I always make a conscious effort to pronounce my name properly.

HelenaRose · 01/02/2011 18:12

My real first name ends with 'ruh' and my partner's surname starts with 'ruh'. [facepalm] I'm thinking of making myself up a middle name just so it doesn't sound quite so silly.

In my accent I rarely pronounce the 't' in Charlotte, sorry OP.

I once knew a family whose surname started with a D and the children were Annick, Patrick and Colette. It just seemed like such hard work to say there names.

pinkstinks · 01/02/2011 19:02

I am a charlotte, and being called "char" is much much worse than a dropped 't' here and there!

mumofeach · 01/02/2011 20:06

Beautiful name, but that as one of our concerns too. The thing is if you love it, I would just make the point of always pronouncing the 't' when introducing her.
