Names to go with Oliver and Edith....

N1MTB · 01/02/2011 10:18

...now, that has probably outed me if anybody I know is on here!!

This is a purely speculative thread as am not even pregnant yet...

Anyway, DH and I are considering whether to have number 3. We had HUGE problems agreeing names for number 2 (she ended up as Edith) and we had to resort to writing his choice and my choice on pieces of paper, scrunching them up and me choosing a hand.... (His choice was Eva as I completely vetoed his other favourite Isobel - just because we know too many.) We had to cancel 3 appointments to get her birth registered because we couldn't decide on a name. We also didn't decide on DS's name for 2 weeks after his birth either. (We knew each time what we were having, so no excuses there.)

I love the name "Oliver" despite it being the most common name in the UK - weirdly, we don't know any other Olivers (yet) apart from a little boy who used to go to his nursery. And I really love the name "Edith" too (I got my choice!) - she's called "Edie" most of the time.

I'm going to struggle to get anything "too posh" or "too weird" past DH, so my favourites of Imogen and Hope are out if we have a girl. I like Barnaby and Jacob for a boy - and also Edward (provided the shortening is Ted/Teddy - but DH would never go for that shortening). He likes George, as do I, so that's a possibility but I don't love it.

I am considering opening with suggestions like Tarquin and Arabella, just so he thinks that I have compromised when I go for something not quite so "snooty".

Any ideas gratefully received! (Can't have William - does not work at all with our surname!!)

Oliver, Edith and Frances
Oliver, Edith and Harriet
Oliver, Edith and Tamsin
Oliver, Edith and Matilda
Oliver, Edith and Alice

Oliver, Edith and Benjamin
Oliver, Edith and Joseph
Oliver, Edith and Francis
Oliver, Edith and Robert
Oliver, Edith and Nathaniel

N1MTB · 01/02/2011 10:32

Wow! Thanks Jumpy Jack

Can't have Matilda or Alice. Or Joseph or Robert! Very close family names or middle names.

Actually, I really like Benjamin.... Hadn't even thought of that one properly. And it's quite an obvious one to consider with an Oliver. Hmmmm....

Ha. We have friends called Oliver and Edith, so this thread jumped out at me. They are a lovely a German couple.

The names are very German. Perhaps something like Rudigar or Ilse would go with them. :)

What about Thomas, or Phillip.

AllieW · 01/02/2011 10:41

Oliver, Edith & Annabel
Oliver, Edith & Beatrice
Oliver, Edith & Constance
Oliver, Edith & Ellen
Oliver, Edith & Francesca
Oliver, Edith & Helena
Oliver, Edith & Josette
Oliver, Edith & Kathleen

Oliver, Edith & Alec
Oliver, Edith & Arthur
Oliver, Edith & Bartholomew
Oliver, Edith & Caleb
Oliver, Edith & Charles
Oliver, Edith & Donovan
Oliver, Edith & Henry
Oliver, Edith & Jerome
Oliver, Edith & Jonathan
Oliver, Edith & Lawrence
Oliver, Edith & Nicholas

N1MTB · 01/02/2011 11:47

hee hee - I have quite a Germanic name too but we're not German....

LOVE Henry, but , very sadly, I'm not allowed it (on the "too posh" basis - tried it before). Also love Constance and Helena - I just might be allowed Helena..... Thomas is nice too and we have thought about that - I do like it but I don't love it (yet!).

I have suggested Rosamund before (and Rosalind) but that got knocked back. Basically, DH wants good solid "normal" names - i.e. ones that he was familiar with when he was at school.

Also love Beatrice but can't have that (at the risk of completely outing myself, it's my sister's name).

So far, I think the front runners (on the basis that I have to get DH to agree) are Helena and Benjamin!

Thanks all!

I love your name taste. I am 19+2 with DC1 and if she's a girl (we'll find out soon) she's going to be called Isobel Edith!!!

For us it's the other way around - we don't know any Isobels but we know a few Olivers. I think it's a lovely name. Imogen isn't posh - there was another thread on this recently. It's pretty high in the popularity stakes (though not as high as Isobel) ... really don't think it's posh at all.

I really like Edward and George, but DH won't have George and Edward is my SIL's most-hated ex, so we can't really have that! Love the nn Teddy.

Anyway, this thread is about you, not me! Other boy's names I like (and which you, based on the logic that we have some similarities in taste) might also like are:

Charles/Charlie
James
Gregory
Joseph
Arthur

And for a girl we also liked

Imogen
Florence
Martha
Madeleine (can't have this as it's so close to my own name)
Alice (DH likes this, I'm not so keen).
Beth

I like your strategy re: Tarquin and Arabella! Try it - I'd like to know the results Wink

N1MTB · 01/02/2011 12:12

Ah - thanks Takethatlady!! I love your choices too. Yup - been through most of the ones you suggested too, but they've either been rejected on the basis of being the same as close family members or the too posh thing... Idiot dh Wink I can't believe he thinks "James" is too posh....Ridiculous.

We both thought about, and liked, Eliza for a girl. Probably would register her as Elizabeth, then she could be called Beth if she wanted when she's older. But my cousin's daughter is called Eliza. We still might use that one though - he had 4 children before we had our first (and has good taste and a French wife) so has rather a large number of the good names covered.

Just a thought, as you seem to have similar taste - have you considered Nell? (Registered as Eleanor?) I like that one too.

Good luck with the rest of the pregnancy (and the birth bit...!). We think we won't find out the gender if we have a third but we did for the first two. I was just too excited/impatient... BTW, Edie's middle names are Violet (DH's mum's middle name who died a few years ago) and Alice (my middle name and a family middle name). Oliver's middle names are Alexander Robert. Both children have two middle names, which is a bit of a mouthful but we wanted to put family names in from both sides.

OP posts:
takethatlady · 01/02/2011 14:34

Oh Alexander is on our list too! I like Eliza ... hadn't considered that. I have an auntie and a good friend called Beth so I can't really go for it, but Eliza is very pretty. Maybe for DD2 if DD1 actually happens!

Eleanor is lovely. We like Tess, too, though with Tess as full name on birth certificate.

I hope you get duffed up with DC3 very soon! And thanks for your congrats on the pregnancy. I'm too excited and impatient not to find out the sex, too ...

N1MTB · 01/02/2011 14:52

Hmm - got to convince DH first! But thank you. I think he's nearly there.... Have a few factors, other than names, to consider properly too.. Wink

p.s. I like Tess very much.

Freshmint - Flora is good! Really like that and I think DH might too. I like Camilla (but not Millicent so much) but can't have it (close family name again...). Love Jemima - not allowed it (suggested it for DC2). And we thought about all those boys names for DC1 - like them all but can't have William because of our surname and Charlie is out because it's a close family name - again!! George is a distinct possibility.

Planetlizard - lots of ideas.....! I like Josephine and Serena and, for boys, I like Thomas and James out of your list! (And George, of course...)

freshmint · 02/02/2011 12:20

whoo hoo!
I think flora goes well with both sibs
what about Miles for the boy?
Oliver, Eliza and Miles

yup, I think that is good! you?

loopsngeorge · 02/02/2011 13:37

Well I have an Edith and a George - although actually I think they sound like a bit of an old couple together - we never thought of that till Edith arrived! I would have suggested
Oliver, Edith and Henry....

N1MTB · 03/02/2011 10:03

Freshmint - I have an Edith so would have to have two more to have an Oliver, Edith, Eliza and Miles! Miles would be vetoed though - definitely too posh...

Loopsngeorge - what excellent taste you have in names! Oliver was very nearly a George - yup, I like Henry too for a boy but DH has already decided it's too posh (he's thinking "hooray"...). Damn his Romford roots...

What about Claire? If your dh wants solid dependable names that he was used to in school. Claire is solid and dependable but you will meet very few in school age. In the primary our kids are in (small country one of 101 kids) there isnt a single Claire in any classes.

for a boy well I have to suggest Conrad but what about Neil, Tim or Andrew

Lonnie - that's funny, DH's sister is called Claire and I quite like it actually. I might prefer Clara though - not sure. And I do like Eliza - thanks Fimbo - already thought of that one but it's a goodie.
