I know an English Ceren. Is that Welsh?

mylifewithstrangers · 27/01/2011 13:55

Only as a middle name

mylifewithstrangers · 27/01/2011 13:55

But I do know an English Cerys and Seren though

Why? Are you pg na?
(FWIW my children have names not commonly associated with their country of birth... but we love them and chose them on that basis)

My DSD is called Rheanna (often gets mistaken for Rhiannon which pisses her right off) - DH has some welsh heritage but family has lived in England for several generations.

Anyway if you like a particular name, use it IMO :o

All of the Celyns that I know personally are boys (Celyn is the Welsh word for holly but it is a masculine word). It seems to be being used as a girl's name now too though.

My DC have Welsh names (as do I) but then we are in Wales. My nieces and nephews in London also have Welsh names and don't seem to find it a problem. However when I spent a year at an English university it drove me mad having to explain how to pronounce my name, and I know my friend Ffion had the same problem.

My DDs have welsh middle names because I am welsh. We live in England though, and have no plans to move to wales. If we were living in wales I would have pushed for welsh first names Smile

I've got an English friend called Nerys and always loved her name!

Cerian? I was at school with one whose family are welsh and also know one age 6ish but not sure if any welsh family or not. They are not obviously welsh!

rocketupbum · 27/01/2011 19:50

We are english (with very loose welsh family links) and have Dilys as a middle name.

I am half Welsh and my daughter is Helen Sian. I would have liked Sian as a first name, but it didn't go with a short surname.
I had a sister called Ceridwen but she was always called Ceri.
My niece is called Sioned which I like too.

I'm English (with a Welsh family) with a Welsh name, some pronunciation and spelling issues but aside from that no worries. Didn't really get teased at school beyond normal teasing about names.
