my OH and I can't decided on a middle name for Ivar. I wanted Felix, after OH's brother but he thinks it's too sentimental/weird even though he likes the name Hmm.

any suggestions? baby due in 4 weeks.

Just be careful.

Ivar can sound like 'I've a' so what follows could set your child up for mickeytaking when they're older.

Ivar Edward
Ivar Quinn
Ivar Sebastian

You rarely use/say the middle name that it almost doesn't matter. We chose middle names for our kids that honoured family members. Would that be an option?

apols but i'm not familiar with that spelling (tho' a google throws up an Ikea storage system). To me it looks like a confusion between Ivor and Ivan.

emilie89 · 27/01/2011 14:00

rachel1970 well that's what i wanted to do with Felix, have the baby named after his uncle. But OH is being silly about it.

Don't really have any male members of my family that I would want to honour (no contact with dad or brother and they have rubbish names anyway!) OH's father is called Craig, not having that!

Maybe I will just have to bully OH into using his brother's name. I think Ivar and Felix sound lovely together.

Not heard of Ivar but please be careful. I have a relation who is called Ivor and in his adulthood fed up with the teasing only answered to his middle name. It's not just your surname - it's every sentence someone starts with "Ivor....".

I love the name Ivor cos' I love this relative but I used their preferred name for my own kid.

mopsyflopsy · 27/01/2011 14:45

Ivar is a popular Scandinavian name, isn't it?

How about Ivar Stefan, Ivar Alexander?

mopsyflopsy · 27/01/2011 14:46

What is teaseworthy about Ivor, pancakeflipper?

jonicomelately · 27/01/2011 14:47

If your surname is 'Engine' I'd suggest 'the.'

Otherwise I don't know Grin

PlanetLizard · 27/01/2011 15:45

Ivor James
Ivor Daniel
Ivor William
Ivor Benjamin
Ivor Jacob

mopsyflopsy - there's a stupid joke about Ivor Biggun, I imagine that is what was meant.

Rhubarbgarden · 27/01/2011 20:06

I know an Ivor the Engineer. He laughs about it himself. I think it's a great name. The Ivar spelling does make me think of the Ikea shelves though.

florencepink · 27/01/2011 22:44

also think about when he wants to get married-lots of little girls are called Eva at the moment!

cory · 28/01/2011 09:26

Yup, Ivar perfectly genuine Scandinavian name; found in the Icelandic sagas, but currently enjoying a bit of a renaissance.

cory · 28/01/2011 09:27

It's pronounced Eevur, though.

AllieW · 28/01/2011 09:53

That pronunciation would definitely get it muddled up with Eva, though, wouldn't it?!

NonnoMum · 28/01/2011 09:56

Biggun?
