I heard this name today (pronounced ORiel), and thought it was really pretty, but was just curious to the general consensus surrounding it was?

I don't like it.

I'm an alumni of Oriel College, Oxford and therefore it just makes me think of the college.

liquiditytrap · 26/01/2011 22:59

haha was just going to mention the college. If you have two more you could call them Christ Church and Corpus Christi

Harris Manchester?
Lady Margaret?

I'll stop, shall I?

I do think it's a pretty name, but people will automatically associate it with the college.

SecretNutellaFix · 26/01/2011 23:04

It's very quirky.

The only drawback for me, is that the welsh word for (art) gallery is Oriel.

liquiditytrap · 26/01/2011 23:06

Also Uriel was the name of one of Satan's minions...

cece · 26/01/2011 23:09

I know a school with that name. Would it be for a boy or girl?

meadowlarks · 26/01/2011 23:22

My great-great-great grandmother was called this. Her father was provost of Oriel College. I'm a Magdalen girl myself so I can't say I'm keen Grin

liquiditytrap · 26/01/2011 23:24

ew Magdalen

DuelingFanjo · 26/01/2011 23:26

it's Welsh isn't it?

MardyBra · 26/01/2011 23:27

My immediate thought was washing powder/

Dreya · 27/01/2011 00:57

I have a half sister called Oriel. I really like it. I've never met her Sadso have no idea what she thinks of it. She is much older than me 50 something I believe.

CaptainNancy · 27/01/2011 01:21

I know an Oriel who is in her 40s and is an architect. I think it's a lovely name.

anonymosity · 27/01/2011 02:07

Its the name of a naff cafe / bar in Sloane Square and has been for about 30 yrs.

crisptart · 27/01/2011 07:46

I immediately thought of chocolate biscuits! Damn I want chocolate now lol! :-)

ViolaTricolor · 27/01/2011 07:51

It's a kind of window, so I think immediately of that.

bambiandthumper · 27/01/2011 08:54

Well it was aimed at a little girl, so I'm assuming it's generally a girls name, but I guess it could be either. I think I'd only use it for a girl though. hmmm.

After the bird or the window? Isn't there a US football or baseball called this as well? Over there I guess it would be like calling a child Arsenal.

lisianthus · 27/01/2011 09:00

Baseball team

mum295 · 27/01/2011 09:21

You're thinking of Oriole - which is an option too. Or Ariel?

Hedwig3 · 27/01/2011 09:49

Made me think Little Mermaid.

QueenLaQueefer · 27/01/2011 09:55

Made me think of biscuits, but it is pretty.

Anonymousbird · 27/01/2011 09:56

Auriol is an alternative spelling. Pronounced exactly the same.

I was at school with both an Oriel and an Auriol.

rachel1970 · 27/01/2011 10:51

I like it. I know a boy names Ariel (as in Ariel Sharon from Israel).

shouldnotbehere · 27/01/2011 11:12

I don't like Oriel, but love Aurelia

AllieW · 27/01/2011 18:39

I think of the window straight away, too.
