Middle name to go with Wilf

DS due in 2 weeks-yikes! DP is very keen on Wilf, in fact bub has been called Wilf throughout the pregnancy and it has grown on me. I chose DD's name which DP wasn't initally keen on though he loves it now so am happy to go with his choice for DS. Would like a middle name that will go with Wilf/Wilfred and that DS could use if he ends up hating Wilf. Am thinking Harry or Finlay? Any suggestions/thoughts on either Wilf as first name and middle name to go with it? TIA

Wilfred Harry would be good, not keen on Finlay though. I think a traditional name would sound best with Wilfred as it's quite old-fashioned and a trendy name wouldn't fit as well.

Wilfred Peter
Wilfred George
Wilfred Oliver
Wilfred Adam
Wilfred Matthew
Wilfred Henry
Wilfred Nicholas
Wilfred Simon
Wilfred John
Wilfred Jasper
Wilfred Isaac
Wilfred Luke

I much prefer Finlay to Harry. Finlay is a very old name. Probably older than Wilfred even!

Wilfred Finlay gets my vote :)

And if Finlay is good enough for a King, a 19C credible actor, a political scientist, an astronomer, a medeval bishop, several famous sportsmen, a minister and two Canadian Senators then it's good enough for my son. So NER! Grin

I absolutely love the name Wilf, here are a few suggestions for possible middle names:

Wilfred Alexander
Wilfred Arthur
Wilfred Charles
Wilfred Christopher
Wilfred Edward
Wilfred James
Wilfred Nathaniel
Wilfred Samuel
Wildred Sebastian

Prefer Harry as nickname for Henry, to Harry as stand-alone name.

Oh good, thanks all, this whole name thing is really tricky, on a number of different counts in our case as we have given DD my surname and in-laws are still seriously unhappy about it, or more to the point, with me. In order to appease them we had been thinking of calling bub Alfred which is FIL's middle name but then we realised every other child is called Alfie so decided not to. DP's latest suggestion is Wilfred Alfred. Hence I am on the hunt for something more suitable. I really like Issac planetlizard but surname begins with F, so not so good either!

Ooh ooh I have a Wilf (almost 5)! He is Wilf John which may be a bit dull but he has my surname as a second middle name and then DPs surname (not married), so we wanted something short and not too fussy.

Wilfred Ramsey.

With a name like that he is bound to be a great inventor or engineer. I guarantee it!

yawningbear · 27/01/2011 16:29

Thanks again, Bramley, is your son a Wilf or Wilfred? Can't quite get my head around Wilfred though I do love Wilf and I am sure that will be his name but Wilfred for purpose of birth certificate. Do you find that you get a mainly positve reaction to his name from others? We have tried it out on some of my immediate family and they were a little unsure I think, although again as with me I think it has grown on folk. I am also thinking that short and not too fussy is a good way to go with the middle name, although do have to say Bin that Wilfred Ramsey has a marvellous ring to it. Will try that one out on DP when he gets home later!

He is a Wilf though I do wonder whether we should have gone for Wilfred on his cert. I don't lose any sleep over it though. I only had one negative comment and that was just a work colleague. Everyone else thinks its quite cute and I think it suits him (though I would probably say that whatever he was called!) Some people mishear and call him Will but it doesn't bother him. DP and I both loved it instantly and don't regret it at all. As a contrast DS2 has one of the most common boys name there is because we loved that too.

JojoMags · 27/01/2011 19:12

I also have a Wilf who is 3. He is Wilfrid, and personally and illogically I far prefer this to Wilfred. Would you consider that spelling?

saffyronron · 27/01/2011 19:15

I like Malina's contributions.

yawningbear · 27/01/2011 20:03

I think that DP and I have previously discussed Wilfrid vs Wilfred and he, again quite illogically was v opposed to Wilfrid. I am not sure, though as I am typing this now I am leaning towards Wilfrid perhaps, though not sure why. Perhaps he should just be Wilf on b cert as well. Nathaniel and Samuel are both favourites too. Good to hear that you have had mainly positive reactions though it really shouldn't make any difference. My in-laws are er, traditional, perhaps is one way to put it and spent the first couple of weeks of DD's life calling her Mary even though her name is far, far from unusual, so I can only imagine that Wilf will not go down too well with them. I was concerned as to how it may suit him as a teenager but having consulted with my numerous teenage nieces I have been assured that I have nothing to worry about on that count. I guess we will just have to wait until we meet him though and see if it still feels right or not.
