4 weeks to go and no ideas for a girls. We have no french heritage and this is very french - is it a bit naff to use such a french name in that case?

What do you think of it?

Love it. Not naff at all.

stropicana2011 · 24/01/2011 11:33

This will get mis-pronounced all the time.

No not naff.

MelinaM · 24/01/2011 13:50

Lovely name, not at all naff, go for it! x

Hatterbox · 24/01/2011 15:12

Not naff at all.

I know five Elodies - one 'grown up' (she is one of my closest friends) and four little ones - and none have French heritage.

Go for it.

tel1 · 24/01/2011 15:27

we have 2 in our prim school - neither french

mum295 · 24/01/2011 17:35

I love "Elodie", trying to persuade DH to add it to our shortlist but he's not having it.

Not naff!

Nightstar · 24/01/2011 17:58

Stop naming your children with names beginning with EL!

It will be dated back to 2009/10/11 forever! Jeez, there are soooo many right now.

Sorry, got on one a bit there ;-)

It's lovely. And don't let the French origin deter you if you love the name. Think of all the other (French) names around - Madeleine, Amelie, Esme etc...

mathanxiety · 24/01/2011 20:39

It sounds weirdly truncated to me, like it was supposed to be Melody but lost the M somewhere. Or like a mixture of the terribly popular El sound with Melody.

And I think it means 'marsh' or 'swamp'.

friedeggs · 25/01/2011 13:23

Lovely name! It was on my shortlist til i found out im having a boy. I have a French name with no French heritage an I get so many lovely comments on it. Go for it, good luck!

snowangels1 · 26/01/2011 09:04

I like it - it was on my name list but we had to scrap it as it doesn't go well with our surname. If you want something a bit similar but not as french there's always Elosie.

ComeAlongPond · 26/01/2011 13:15

I love it. I know one, she's 19 and no French heritage at all. Definitely not naff.

Dreya · 27/01/2011 01:35

I think it is beautiful. It matters not a jot that you don't have a French connection. (I have also chosen a French name for DD due on 1st Feb Grin) Go for it!

anonymosity · 27/01/2011 02:07

Its lovely and I know one, age 3 who is a very beautiful and full of mischief child. (not that it makes any difference)

AllieW · 27/01/2011 18:57

LOVE it.

TheGoddessBlossom · 27/01/2011 18:59

I know one, she is called Ellie for short, I think it's lovely.

threefeethighandrising · 27/01/2011 23:19

I love it. It was my top girls name when I was PG. I had a boy.

Then, when my best friend was PG she rang me ans asked if I would mind if she could use the name as it was the only one she and her DH could agree on. I said yes. They had a boy.

It's getting fairly popular now (relatively speaking - it's still quite unusual). I put that down to my one-woman campaign to encourage people to use it, via mumsnet Wink

For an unusual name, it's easy to spell too.

NadiaWadia · 28/01/2011 02:10

It's very pretty.

PlanetLizard · 28/01/2011 11:28

I like it.
