Stuck on girls names - arrrgh!

With only 14 days till our EDD and possibility of baby coming any minute, we have finally managed to narrow our longlist of 35 possible names down to 11! We probably won't choose the final name until after our daughter is born, but I am starting to panic about names (especially when trying to work out which first names fit with which middle names!)

Likely middle name is Edith or Edie as it's my DH's late nan's name. I wasn't that keen to begin with but actually it's starting to grow on me now and I am almost at the point of considering it as a first name as well...

Anyway, what do you think of the following list and which (if any) fit best with Edith / Edie:

Imogen
Miranda
Iris
Matilda
Julia
Madeleine
Elizabeth
Adeline
Heloise
Helena
Matilde

Other possible middle names are Rose, Jo, Beth or Grace but none of these (except Jo, which is my nan's name - still living) have the significance for us that Edith/Edie does.

Any thoughts?

I'd keep the middle name as Edie or Edith.

I know it seems daft, but wait to see what suits her when she's born WRT her first name. All those on the list are lovely and would fit with your chosen middle name. It's more important that whatever you choose goes with your surname, and that the initials don't embarrass your daughter (eg having the initials SOD or POO for example!)

Not keen on Edith as a first name but I do rather like Edie but I know others will do this Hmm because its more of a nn.

First names I like imogen, mathilda and Elizabeth a lot.

I really dislike heloise and Miranda.

The others are all just ok to me.

But that's just me, none of those names are awful by any means.

Mathilda rose is beautiful :)

I think you may regret it if you don't use Edith in the middle.

From your list, I think the combinations which flow best are:

Helena Edith and Matilda Edith

Nightstar · 17/01/2011 18:15

I like Julia

Couldnt you have two middle names and use both Edith and Jo?

GandalfyCarawak · 17/01/2011 18:17

Elizabeth Edith.
You can't go wrong with Elizabeth- Pretty, classic, lots of possible nicknames.
Would Edith as a first name be a possibility? Edith Jo after both grans is lovely. :)

Piranha1981 · 17/01/2011 18:25

I love Elizabeth too. The only problem is our surname is Taylor (well actually it's double-barrelled so Taylor-xxxx) - but still... Tbh not sure I actually care about this though.

You've picked some lovely names. Not sure that Imogen, Iris or Adeline go well with Edith and much prefer Matilda to Matilde. Helena, Matilda, Miranda and Elizabeth are my favourites from your list.

Hedwig3 · 17/01/2011 19:21

Miranda Edith would be my choice.

Or Edith Miranda actually.

girlafraid · 17/01/2011 19:32

Julia Edith sounds lovely to me

telsa · 17/01/2011 19:35

Iris Edith really won't work. It all runs together and is very lispy. Matilda Edith is lovely. I like Adeline Edith too - very Edwardian, but charming. Helena Edith has a good ring too. I think Edith would make a great first name actually. Miranda Edith is very nice.

SE13Mummy · 17/01/2011 22:22

I like Imogen Edith or possibly Madeleine Edith most of all but then I do rather like names to finish properly before the next one starts e.g. Edith Iris as opposed to Iris Edith.

HelenaRose · 17/01/2011 23:20

Imogen - lovely
Miranda - one of my favourites
Iris - not keen
Matilda - lovely
Julia - reminds me of 1984
Madeleine - beautiful
Elizabeth - one of my favourites
Adeline - pretty
Heloise - think it'll get misheard a lot
Helena - lovely
Matilde - think I prefer this to Matilda

mathanxiety · 18/01/2011 06:59

Imogen - I think of this as a frumpy name
Miranda - love
Iris - always seems a bit church ladyish to me
Matilda - love
Julia - nice but reminds me of Seinfeld, so a bit 90s
Madeleine - love
Elizabeth - love but maybe not with "Taylor-XXX"
Adeline - love
Heloise - a fancy version of the very popular and wispy sounding Ellie
Helena - love
Matilde - prefer Matilda

Josephine, if that's the name of your Nan, is beautiful, and even if it isn't, it's close enough. Would you consider Josephine Edith?

If not, then I vote for Madeleine Edith Or Matilda Edith.

HettyAmaretti · 18/01/2011 07:10

Edith Rose

mamaloco · 18/01/2011 07:13

Adeline is so lovely and not overused.

Adeline Edith Taylor-xxxx sound really nice too

diddl · 18/01/2011 08:37

I love Imogen.

Edith is great as a middle name.
