Any thoughts on the name Elfrida? I like Elfrida with Elfie or Freddie for short for a baby girl...I really want an unusual old english name.

No, it's not a name, it's an affliction!

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 14/01/2011 18:11

I know an Elfrida (not English) and I hate to say it but I smirk every time I remember her name. She calls herself Ellie.

Also what if people started calling her Elf-Rider, similar to Flo-Rida?

Having said that Elfie is a lovely nickname. Think Aelfrith is another version of the name. TBH half of the OE names we have begin with Ael/El so there must be plenty of choice. What about Adeline?

taintedpaint · 14/01/2011 18:55

I don't love it, I must say.

Nightstar · 14/01/2011 19:34

Sounds like two names pushed together. Elle and Frieda. Bit odd.

There must be some variations that are more normal that you like?

Bumperlicious · 14/01/2011 19:47

No. What about Frederica if you like Freddie.

bigbluebump · 14/01/2011 20:04

Elfrieda is a more common version of the name.

I have a (French) friend called Frederique and we call her Freddie.

NannyState · 14/01/2011 20:28

Not a nice name.

Frieda is pretty, though.

lilly13 · 14/01/2011 20:43

How about Efimia (NN: Fima)? It is a very rare Greek name. Otherwise, prefer Frida. However, Fridas I met were most jewish.

onimolap · 14/01/2011 20:47

I rather like it.

It's also the name of this foundation.

wuggglemump · 14/01/2011 20:51

She's not been born and clearly you hate her.
Don't do it.

Really...? It's a no from me (and I'm usually pretty "out there" when it comes to names).

Sorry.

Dreya · 15/01/2011 03:27

At first I thought I liked Elfie. I've never heard it before. But then I said it out loud and it sounds like I'm saying healthy so that's put me off it a little bit. At first glance I saw 'Elkie' and I really like that. Elkie Brooks was one of my mums fave singers back in the day. Smile Elfrida sounds like one of the names of the ugly stepsisters. It's just not very pretty. Elephants suggestion of Aelfrith is really very nice. Much better than Elfrida.

mathanxiety · 15/01/2011 05:03

I love it. It sounds really light and yet pleasantly Germanic at the same time. I love Frida too.

migola · 15/01/2011 09:28

Sorry I don't like it but I love Frida

PlanetLizard · 15/01/2011 10:07

I don't like it, sorry. Makes me think of elves and Freda.

belgo · 15/01/2011 10:08

I quite like it.

RetroMum1 · 15/01/2011 15:46

I know a 6 month old Elfrida who is known as Elfie and I think it's really sweet. She is named after her grandmother which I think is nice as well as it means something.

GlynistheMenace · 15/01/2011 15:54

I love the name Elfrida.

When I was a young child, we had a wonderful neighbour called the same. She was German and she and her Polish husband came to live in our town in the early 1940's....refugees from the terrible things that were happening at home Sad She used to tell me wonderful stories about Germany, and make fabulous hot drinks Grin

Whenever I hear the name I think of the lovely old lady and her kindness.

I think you could use Ellie, Elfi or Frida as a shortened version.

bambiandthumper · 15/01/2011 16:10

How about Frederica?

brockleyD · 16/01/2011 10:11

Thanks everyone for feedback, I guess there is no name that everybody likes and the ones that a lot of people like end up being so common you can't win!

LetThereBeRock · 16/01/2011 14:34

It's hideous.

mamadiva · 16/01/2011 14:51

Brockley- FWIW I don't like it at allBUT you hae to go with what you like not what anyone else thinks!

I know an Elfhin though which makes me think of Elephants... needless to say she gave her DD a 'normal' name (her words).

NannyState · 16/01/2011 21:30

Elfie? Poor kid!

babybear1983 · 16/01/2011 21:42

When I first saw this I thought NO NO NO but by the time I got to the bottom of the page it has started to grow on me. Elfie is cute for a baby/toddler but what about when she's older?
DH has an unusual name and hates it although it does mean that people remember you more than any old plain named guy!
