I like both - but i think Joseph is slightly nicer.

ohnoshedittant · 14/01/2011 02:34

I like Seth better than Joseph. I really like Finlay Joseph or Finlay James though.

ChippingIn · 14/01/2011 02:47

Out of those two options with no variations....Joseph Finlay

Joseph James
Finlay Joseph
Finlay James

With Finlay James getting my vote if you're open to moving the names around.

Hmm are you getting that Seth isn't really working for me :) Distant memories of some old bloke on Emmerdale I think!!

You do realise it will be split 50/50 don't you.

Anyway, I think having a couple of names and not choosing until you see the baby is the way to go anyway unless you have been in love with a name forever and they will be called that regardless!

mathanxiety · 14/01/2011 05:34

Joseph Finlay.

Or Joseph James.

(I think of 'Seth' as something a snake might say if I stuck around long enough to chat)

JojoMags · 14/01/2011 09:06

I agree with mathanxiety. Joseph James was on our shortlist, and is fab, but I am Jo and DH is James so thought it might be a bit to narcissistic!

PracticallyImperfectInEveryWay · 14/01/2011 09:10

I like both, don't think you could go wrong with either :).

You have named 3 of my most favourite boys names in the whole world being Joseph, Finlay and Seth - and DH has in the past vetoed all :(.

CrapBag · 14/01/2011 09:44

Not a fan of Seth.

NewImprovedJollster · 14/01/2011 11:03

Joseph Finley (prefer the e spelling myself?)

minkiemoo · 14/01/2011 11:41

thank you all so much!!! I like some of the options where the names have been mixed up.

ChippingIn - you're right Seth was an old chap with a huge moustache in Emmerdale with if I remember rightly!

NewImproved - keep playing around with the e/a variations of the name.

And all of you who have suggested Joseph James - that was something else I'd been toying with but wasn't sure how well it worked having the 2 names beginning with J.

Thanks guys - really appreciate all your thoughts!

Joseph James

onimolap · 14/01/2011 12:44

I prefer Joseph, and woud also go for Joseph James (also gives option of JJ as nickname).

Nightstar · 14/01/2011 12:52

I dont like Seth either. Certainly seems to be quite unpopular on here.

I like Joseph James as well, it works

3nearly4 · 14/01/2011 12:56

I really dislike Joseph James - just reminds me of Britney with her Jayden James. JJ is not a nickname I like either!

Finlay is my favourite name there. I would go for Finlay Joseph or Joseph Finlay.

3nearly4 · 14/01/2011 12:56

PS Dislike Seth too. Sounds very harsh and angry.

Checkmate · 14/01/2011 12:59

Seth as Joseph is really over used in my area a the moment.

3rdnparty · 14/01/2011 13:05

Against the flow I like Seth maybe because lots of James (know 4

takethatlady · 14/01/2011 13:23

Joseph Finlay gets my vote. Love it :)

You can't go wrong with either though.

ChippingIn · 14/01/2011 13:39

I like Finlay with an a. To me, Finley just seems like you're trying to be edgy/different and it's not a bit like spelling Tracy, Trayzee (sorry 3rdn!)

takethatlady · 14/01/2011 14:32

They're Scottish and Irish spellings of the same name, and both are equally legitimate (I think).

3nearly4 · 14/01/2011 14:37

Finlay is a Scottish name. Finley is a more modern spelling of Finlay. AFAIK it's not Irish.

allbie · 14/01/2011 14:51

I like Seth best but not with James! Seth Joseph would be nice.

minkiemoo · 14/01/2011 18:56

Thank you again everyone!! :)

It's origin is Gaelic, AFAIK, and the names have mutated into different spellings in each tradition. But this is from my baby name book, and God knows how accurate that is. It does appear on a lot of Irish baby name websites too though.

stressedbutluvem · 17/01/2011 14:22

We liked Joseph and James but were a bit unsure about all the J's going on so we added Liam in the middle to break it up a bit. Joseph Liam James is, even if I say it myself a fantastic little chap and the name is really versatile as Joe when he's being an angel (~most of the time) and the full thing when he's up to no good. Joseph, Liam James what are you doing!!

megsacat · 17/01/2011 15:51

Joseph very nice and think its fine with James as middle a name. Really dont like seth, finlay is nice but very now if that matters to you.
