Rohan or Rowan??

Due our second baby in April - got a name decided if it's a girl, and love the name Rohan for a boy. My problem is how do you spell it for how I want it said (if you know what I mean)! Would Rohan be said Ro - Han? I like Rowan (said Ro-Wan) but prefer the spelling of Rohan! Also do you think Rowan is a suitable girls name? We've fallen in love with this name and think we could maybe use Rowan for a girls middle name? :)

I love Roanne for a girl, friends dd is called this.

I kind of like the look of Rohan more for a boy because of the Rowan being unisex thing but then if its pronounced the english way I would consider Rowan more boyish, and girls normally would spell it Roanne or Rawanne?

I do know boy Rowans so think it's fine really and if Rohan is supposed to be said differently then could be confusing

Rowan!

ilythia · 14/01/2011 11:28

Rowan is a brilliant girl's name.
Never Rohan though, that's a boys name.

Imo.

Rowan is lovely.

Rohan = fleeces and waterproof clothing to me

kreecherlivesupstairs · 14/01/2011 12:35

I know three Rohan boys, they are all Indian. It is a lovely name, but I prefer the softer Rowan.

Nightstar · 14/01/2011 13:06

Rohan is NOT pronounced Ro-Han! (Except maybe in Lord of the Rings, which has no baring on reality)

Honestly people who prounounce names phoenetically instead of the old fashioned but real pronounciation are daft as brushes in my opinion.

It has always been pronounced Rowan, regardless of spelling. The difference is that Rohan is the old fashioned spelling for the male version of the name and Rowan is the old fashioned spelling of the female version of the name. Look it up!

mumofcupcake · 14/01/2011 14:35

Great info Nightstar! Pleased you've told me that - love the spelling of it as Rohan, but would want it said as Rowan!
vintageteacups - is Roanne said Ro-Anne or Rowan ....if you know what I mean? :)

Rowan unless you're INdian. I think Rohan is a boys name.

The Rohan (Row-han) I know has two parents who are Indian. They definitely pronounce it that way. I assume they use the correct Indian pronunction, esp as they regularly visit family in India, etc.

Nightstar · 14/01/2011 21:32

Ah Ok, maybe in India it is pronounced that way. I hang my head. But not in England, its an old English name too, and definitely not prounounced that way. I never studied Eastern names.

Mollydoggerson · 14/01/2011 21:35

My ds2 is Eowan named after the Rowan tree.

There is an Irish name Ruadhan, meaning little red haired boy, which I think people loosely translate to Rowan, but for me they are two different names.

Mollydoggerson · 14/01/2011 21:36

Oops meant ds2 is Rowan!

missmakesstuff · 14/01/2011 21:38

Rohan (Row-han) is a Sikh boys name, I teach lots of them. I know a Roan - boy, pronounced rowan. Rowan can be a girls name though I think, lovely for either, but quite unisex.

growing3rdbump · 14/01/2011 21:44

I have an Indian friend whose son is called Rohan (Ro-han). I know a girl called Rowan.

Rowan is used as a girls name in Scotland
1st syllable pronounced like an arguement

Yes it can be a bit unisex but she has a very feminine middle name

Lovely lass, bright, chatty, helpful... ( I'm biased though )

lisianthus · 15/01/2011 19:50

What Nightstar said. I also know a Rohan. He's in his 40s, of English/Scottish background and it's definitely pronounced "Rowan".

I agree that the Indian version of this name may be pronounced differently, but the old English/Scottish name is nit.

BuntyPenfold · 15/01/2011 22:04

Rowan is a girls name, always has been until *** Rowan Atkinson, who has ruined it rather. He has a girl's name.

My daughter is Rowan Elizabeth, it is lovely and classic, and she has her own rowan tree the same age, grown from a berry when she was born.

annasophia · 15/01/2011 22:19

I pronounce Rowan as Row (rhymes with How)-an. Perhaps I'm influenced by the name of our local school called this.

I'd pronounce Rohan as Row (rhyme with bo)-an.

I prefer Rohan for a boy and Rowena for a girl.

NacMacFeegle · 16/01/2011 17:24

My DS2 is Rowan, and when I chose it I didn't know any at all - heard of loads now!

I would like to use Rohan, but everyone would KNOW it was from my LOTR obsession. I do, however, reserve the right, should I ever have twins, to name them Gandalf and Saruman. Grin

FooffyShmoofer · 18/01/2011 21:34

My DS is Rohan from the Gaelic origin. It is pronounced Ro-an and the H is silent.

It was around alot longer than flippin LOTR.

The sanskrit is Ro Han with emphasis on the H.

Can you tell we researched this one before using it?

If anybody pronounces it wrongly DS quite firmly corrects them.

AnayaLa · 10/06/2014 08:58

So silly. Rohan is a very old name with both Sanskrit/Hindi and Irish/Gaelic origins, the Sanskrit meaning is "one who takes the higher path" or " one who rises, ascends or achieves great heights." Note that Sanskrit is considered to be one of the oldest languages in the world (though like Latin no longer spoken) if not arguably, the oldest.

The Indian version is pronounced with the H.

It did not originate with the Lord of the Rings or become popular because of a clothing store brand. Do your research people!
