Boys' list

Hi there,

I am 16+3 with DC1 Smile and DH are struggling away with boys' names.

If it's a girl we are pretty sure (for the moment) we'll be going with Isobel Edith (Edith is DH's grandmother, who died shortly after we got married).

If it's a boy, we're flummoxed. Clive will be the middle name (after DH's dad). For first names we currently have the following long list, all of which one or both of us likes. But there isn't one name that really jumps out at us. Help us decide?!:

Charles (nn Charlie) Clive
Alexander Clive
Leo Clive
Finley/Finlay Clive
Arthur Clive
Felix Clive
Finn Clive
Frederick (nn Fred/Freddie) Clive
Sidney (nn Sid) Clive
Gregory (nn Greg) Clive

I like Charlie, Sid and Greg best. DH likes Finley, Felix, Freddie and Greg. He's got a thing about the letter F, it seems! What do you think?

Leo and Alexander.

mathanxiety · 13/01/2011 15:56

But I also like Clive...

ValiumTinselton · 13/01/2011 17:43

oh good I thought I'd be mocked for saying Clive and Jeff are due a come back.

takethatlady · 14/01/2011 08:21

Greg wins with 9! Alex 6, Fred 4, Sid 2 :( Poor old Sid ...

Not that this means I'm definitely going with Greg, obviously (!!!), but nice to see it's a popular name on here ...

Feel like we're at least getting somewhere now. Thanks ladies!

So who's going to call their baby Jeff? Grin

Definitely Gregory. Was my choice for dc4 if a fourth boy. Was a dd who is Genevieve.

3nearly4 · 14/01/2011 12:58

Finn, Felix & Arthur are my favourites.

Gregs were always horrible boys at school so that puts me off the name!

takethatlady · 14/01/2011 13:19

Very pretty ilovegregoryhouse :) And thanks!

Grin at horrid schoolboy Gregs ... I'm 28 and there were no Gregs at my primary school (went to girls' secondary) and only one at DH's boys' secondary, and, come to think of it, he was hot (DH and I went to the same primary school and then the boys' and girls' branch of the same secondary...)

I still like Arthur, too, but really not keen on Finn or Felix. DH likes them a lot though.

To me Greg is such a 70s name as I knew loads of Gregs growing up! I see along the same lines as Jason, Robert, Mark, Sean etc..

takethatlady · 14/01/2011 13:37

MN just deleted my post Angry

Jason, Robert and Mark? Did you go to school with Take That?! Envy All 1970s boys, I might add ...

That's interesting about Gregory being a 1970s name. It must have gone out of fashion by the 80s. Once I saw a list of top 10 or maybe top 20 names in each decade, but I can't find the link now. It might bave been a census thing ...

Oh! Here it is: link

You have to click 'Historic Baby Names' from the list :)

Gregory was 94th in 1954, 78th in 1964, 81st in 1974, 85th in 1984, and has never appeared since!

Great link!

A few others that remind me of Gregory which were of similar popularity in 1974 births - Tony, Glen, Gavin, Russell, Jeremy, Stewart.... bleugh!

mathanxiety · 14/01/2011 15:02

I know a family that has a Jason and a Lisa, both teenagers. Unique names...

ValiumSilverTongue · 14/01/2011 15:33

There's a stewart in my dd's class. Though huh to begin with but it's grown on me. Anthony is odd for a baby in my opinion, but Anton would be really cool.

MaElsie · 14/01/2011 15:50

Charles (nn Charlie) Clive - yes
Alexander Clive - best one
Leo Clive - no
Finley/Finlay Clive - yes
Arthur Clive - no
Felix Clive - no
Finn Clive - no, too few syllables
Frederick (nn Fred/Freddie) Clive - yes
Sidney (nn Sid) Clive - no
Gregory (nn Greg) Clive - yes

meadowlarks · 14/01/2011 17:27

Valium - my great-great-great grandfather was a German Jew called Anton and I've been itching to shortlist it ever since I found out. Annoyingly, DP has flat-out refused to be associated with Anton Du Beke Sad

OP, Gregory is a good strong name and won't go out of fashion. My second choice would be Arthur because I think it goes best with Clive. I do like Clive on its own, though, even if it isn't the most fashionable.

ValiumSilverTongue · 14/01/2011 18:01

I think there's an actor called Anton Rodgers as well. Drop it in to conversation from time to time, make the name seem like David by the time you've finished drip feeding it in to his psyche.

i liked the name Bruno and my x just said "tonioli" and that was it. NO way because there was one other Bruno out there. Men Confused

takethatlady · 14/01/2011 18:38

Thanks ladies! Erring on the side of Gregory at the moment, though I still have a sneaky penchant for Sid (I seem to be the only one, but he was my granddad).

Anton and Bruno are both lovely names, and especially lovely if there's a personal connection! Bruno is a character in The Witches by Roald Dahl too, though he does get turned into a mouse - so perhaps don't tell your DP that!

The film Gregory's Girl is very 80's. I personally like it although we are toying with Gregor. as a name ending in a "ee" sound clashes with our surname!

NewImprovedJollster · 14/01/2011 21:12

aww, either lovely ttl... Gregory prob slightly safer, but I can see a cheeky little Sid chasing around.

Glad ILGH dropped in to recommend Gregory, she chose my mum's name Genevieve for her DD as she said. Ok, so how many more of my family names can we get on this thread before it expires... Grin
