How do you introduce your DC?

Possibly a stupid question Blush If someone asks what your DC is called, do you give their actual name or their nn, assuming they are different obviously, or do you give both?

At the moment with DD I do a confused version of all of the above Blush If we have a DS next then we may end up choosing a very common given name with a very odd nn eg (but not) Edward/Bear. Which name would you use to introduce your child? Not sure I'd want people to think I'd actually called my DS Bear but seems stupid to introduce someone with a name you don't actually use.

Am I making any sense at all? Blush Confused

I'd say 'his name's Edward James Cheese, we call him Bear'...

HettyAmaretti · 08/01/2011 23:32

mmm, gained a James and lost a Von, but you get the picture Confused

And now to bed.

I give her name, "like the ballerina", because they always mishear me.

I'd say the same as Hetty in the case of your 'DS' Wink

DitaVonCheese · 08/01/2011 23:49

People always mishear the name Dita as well - perhaps I should start saying "like the stripper" Grin

This is why i picked three non nick nameable names for my three Wink

In my case i have a full name and a shortened version and based on who i'm talking to i introduce myself by either... usually full name for older folks and official types and shortened for most others

If we go with the name then it's because we like the nn but feel it's too silly to have as a given name Blush

Also DD has ended up often being referred to as Bear or the Chimp Blush (nb her actual name is not Edward Wink). Don't tend to introduce her as either of those!

Last post was actually in reply to SummerRain but works for yours too cat64 - nn is silly, and universally derided by MNers Grin

Grin OP. But technically a dancer too Confused

SummerRain · 09/01/2011 00:21

dd is Kitten, ds1 is Monkey/Babyboy and ds2 is Sausage/The Diva in this house Grin

DitaVonCheese · 09/01/2011 00:21

Indeed. And a hottie Grin I'd actually describe her as a burlesque dancer rather than a stripper, but I think that would confuse a lot of people.

Could you just keep the nn for family and friends and introduce him to others as his 'name'?

I would hate to have a secret name than nobody likes enough to use, especially if people also think my used name is 'silly'.

Use both names in different contexts.

Eskarina · 09/01/2011 17:57

What do you want other people to call them? Introduce them as that. My name is easily shortenable but has no regular nickname. Noone shortens it. DH's name has a very common shortening which he doesn't use, (say he's Stephen rather than Steve). It really grates when people assume he's a "steve"
