Hello,

I like the name Evan for a boy (i am a fan of brothers and sisters) I looked it up and it said it was popular although i dont know anyone with it. It said it meant John and was Welsh. Is this a popular name?

No disrepect to really popular names as i dont want a stand out different wacky name but dont want an equivillant to Jack or Harry (both names i like but are too popular for me)

Thanks

I only know one Evan, and he isn't in a Welsh family...but I am! no Evans in there at all.

I like it :)

The only Evan I know is Evan Evans and very welsh. Don't know any child ones though but I don't know about in Wales.

Seems a good name for what you want

ValiumTinselton · 08/01/2011 16:43

I know of one aged 7, he's not welsh.

readywithwellies · 08/01/2011 16:57

There is no V in the Welsh alphabet so technically it can't be derived from the Welsh language, however that does not make it 'wrong'

If you want Welsh and similar but less popular - try Ifan. 'Ee-van'.

dreamingofsun · 08/01/2011 17:51

evan is welsh, but very nice

CameronCook · 08/01/2011 20:04

I know an 11 year old Evan (who looks like Harry Potter - not that you needed to know that) - from a Welsh family with a typically Welsh surname.

SecretNutellaFix · 08/01/2011 20:09

Evan is the anglicised spelling of Efan/ Ifan. I know a couple and I live in Wales.

It's a lovely name.

bessyboop · 08/01/2011 20:22

I live in Wales, and know a lot of Ifan's. Evan as well (most of Evan's are old). I know an Efan as well. Lovely name Smile

Nightstar · 09/01/2011 17:49

Evans is a Welsh surname, but I'm not sure it it used much here in Wales as a first name.

I think of Evan Almighty (The film, which is American)

minipie · 09/01/2011 17:54

Nice name. It's Welsh but sufficiently common outside Wales that I think you could use it even if you're not Welsh.

But it's not that common either, ie it's not Harry or Jack.

minipie · 09/01/2011 17:55

sorry just seen from your username (bethan) you probably are Welsh!

cowboylover · 09/01/2011 19:37

I am in Wales and agree its the English spelling of Ifan which is not massivly popular.

I think its a really nice name that travels over the border well! Grin

AnnOnimous · 09/01/2011 20:24

Efan does sounds a bit like Effing, which Evan does not, so I plump for Evan.

hellymelly · 09/01/2011 20:33

My brother is called Evan.He is one of only a handful I've met his age,but there are a few little ones round here (wild Wales). its such a classic Welsh name that I would be surprised that anyone not Welsh would want use it.....They rape our country...then they steal our cultural heritage....bla bla bla...(am hoping you are welsh?)By the way Efan is pronounced exactly the same as Evan.In Welsh "f" sounds like the English "v".

Doramustdie · 09/01/2011 20:34

Love the name Evan. I know only one a Scottish one at that.

According to wikipedia 'Evan' is Celtic, Greek, & derived from John which is Hebrew.

Therefore it isn't solely a Welsh name, rather like Lewis is the English for Llewellyn.

I don't think it matters where the name comes from though, as long as you like it..use it :)

bethan37 · 10/01/2011 12:24

Thanks, I am not Welsh by the way and yes I like the name so I think this is my top one at the moment along with Elliot although Evan is better with my surname..... ;)

I live in Wales, but am not Welsh.

We have a friend called Evan, and I have always assumed it to be a Welsh name.

It is a lovely name.

ChessyEvans · 10/01/2011 15:39

Off track a bit but you could go Ethan (I love it but couldn't do it with my surname - married into the Welsh!)

I would probably think Evan was a welsh name - isn't the dragon's den presenter called Evan?

diddenhepths · 10/01/2011 17:05

I think it's most popular in America, though it's getting more popular here too. I know a couple under five.
