Manni?

I have a beautiful 4month old baby called 'manni' I didn't think it was that unusual but when I tell people his name, a lot of people look perplexed! It didn't really help when my mum told my husband after I'd had the cesarean that she thought it was a horrible name and we would regret calling him 'manni'.
I've spoken to lots of friends about it and they all say what a great name and it really suits him. Is it really that 'way out there?'
it's actually the danish spelling and means jewel and little man. We're very happy with it but am just interested in other peoples opinion.

It's my sister-in-law's name. Her actual name is Maninder (it's an Indian name), but she has been called Manni all her life.

It's a brave choice, but if you like it, I wouldnt worry what other people think.

FellatioNelson · 07/01/2011 17:02

I have only ever heard it as a shortening of Emmanuel, which is pretty unusual.

shouldnotbehere · 07/01/2011 17:05

Sorry, mispelt her name, it's Mahindar. She really never uses it. Hope Manni is not on here.

starfishmummy · 07/01/2011 17:06

I have only ever heard it in the context of elderly jewish men (Manny)

wuggglemump · 07/01/2011 17:08

I really don't like it. I think it's nicknamey, and not a good nickname.

Deciduousblonde · 07/01/2011 17:09

I have heard of Manny as a shortening for Manuel on a Spanish boy, but that's the only one!

Yes, it's unusual but I don't think it's a real shocking unusual name. It's 'out there' I guess, but not offensive.

There was a film I used to love when I was little about an Icelandic boy called Manni & his horse.

IngridFletcher · 07/01/2011 17:13

Reminds me of old Jewish men much like someone else said...or Black Books.

Deciduousblonde · 07/01/2011 17:15

..or even the mammoth on 'Ice Age'! but he is a lovely character :)

piratecat · 07/01/2011 17:26

SoupDragon · 07/01/2011 17:27

DD is happily watching Handy Manny on TV right this minute.

onimolap · 07/01/2011 17:30

I've only ever gone across it as a nn for Emmanuel.

stressheaderic · 07/01/2011 17:32

Makes me think 'Handy' here too

I like the meaning but not enough to convince me.

tebbles · 07/01/2011 18:08

I think of Handy Manny too. Is your husband Danish?

Rhubarbgarden · 07/01/2011 19:50

The mammoth in Ice Age for me too.
