What do you think of Mae for a first name?

Love it, though it will be spelt wrongly by many. One of mine has an odd spelling of a name (named after my mum so the same spelling she had) and it is misspelt all the time. Can't say it bothers me at all but I know friends with an uncommon version of a well known name who really hate it when their DC names are spelt wrong.

BornToFolk · 05/01/2011 13:50

I really, really like May but am not so keen on the Mae spelling.

ShoppingDays · 05/01/2011 14:18

May is gorgeous, not keen on the Mae spelling though.

NewYearNewPants · 05/01/2011 17:39

I prefer the spelling 'May'. As a first name, lovely. As a middle name, unimaginative.

lal123 · 05/01/2011 17:42

I like it - and I like the spelling. For some reason May seems old ladyish, Mae on the other hand is lovely! We've got a Maia - and it's NEVER spelt right, how people think that Miai = Maia is beyond me

growing3rdbump · 05/01/2011 21:00

I love May - my friend has one and she's gorgeous.

Komondor · 05/01/2011 21:22

I love it, I prefer it spelt Mae too.

tebbles · 05/01/2011 21:32

I prefer May, much nicer with a y in signatures etc
Also I can see problems with people mispelling it Mea.

my ella is ella MAE, how is that unimaginative as a middle name but ok as a first?

tuggy · 05/01/2011 23:57

Because every third child is ella mae, or Lucy mae, or lily MAE.. That's why it's unimaginitive! Very common. Noone said it wasn't nice or pretty or whatever it's just popular. As a first name however it's not so common

I like the name Mae-I would spell it like that too :) if we have a little girl her middle name is gonna be Mae

Pipistrellina · 07/01/2011 15:19

Mae is a great spelling plus has an interesting history; May is a bit old lady-ish but Mae is Mae West (she had flair), Mae Jemison (pioneering African American doctor and astronaut)...

I prefer May. Mae looks downmarket. Mae West was really a Mary. Mae was her nickname.

jazz412 · 09/01/2011 16:18

May seems very old fashioned and quite old lady like, Mae is a lovely spelling. I've also seen it spelt Mai which I like as well :) x

Deciduousblonde · 09/01/2011 16:30

Funnily enough I prefer it spelled Mae as a first name, and May as a middle name. Odd, I know...

Lamorna · 09/01/2011 16:40

Prefer May.

Tramadol · 09/01/2011 16:49

Its just TOO popular.

Nightstar · 09/01/2011 16:56

Dont like the American spelling, prefer the English May.

lilly13 · 10/01/2011 18:50

Prefer May

hmberry · 10/01/2011 19:27

I like May but love Mae think its much nicer and i know four May's but no Mae's.
So Mae for me.

freerangeeggs · 11/01/2011 19:09

I think May and Mae are both sweet and simple and lovely.

I think I slightly prefer May but it's only slightly.

Claire1lou · 12/01/2011 13:30

We called our little girl May, I still love it. It is old fashioned but that was part of the appeal for us! It suits her and i havn't heard of any other little girls with it as a first name. I agree it is too common as middle name ( still pretty tho) Smile
