Lily?

Am only just beginning to start thinking about having a baby (see user name!), but am sitting here idly wondering if it would be ok to name a girl Lily.....if my surname was Allen?

I am quite a fan of the original but I'm not thinking of actually naming my child after her, I just really like the name Lily.

A lovely name, but I dont think you can give your daughter the same name as someone so famous.

LindtLover · 05/01/2011 13:43

If you really like it then do but only if you like it enough to be prepared to put up with lots of funny comments.

Also, Lily is now very popular so its likely that she would be one of many in her class and any baby groups you go to. I know 3 Lily's all born in the last year, it is a lovely name though.

No, just don't!

we made that mistake with a famous model, who shares our surname. We had the same full name, but just thought we wouldn't use her nick name, and hey, problem solved! But no, it was a nightmare... now DD is never called by her full name, and is only every known by a different nickname which doesn't immediately make you think of the famous model.

Oh I loved the name Lily and wanted it for dd, but stupidly had already called the dog Lily.

did not think that through

However I have made her promise to call one of my grandbabies Lily instead. :D

It's a lovely name but you'd get comments all the time. Might not bother you the first couple of times but it would soon become annoying I think.

We did the same with Poppy, kicking myself now! Grin

As did we with 'Polly'... ho hum.

Thanks for your replies.

Catsmamma, one of our cats has a name that I would like for a boy. It is getting on a bit though.....

Good point about the general popularity of the name too. Funnily enough a few hours after I posted my question, there was an item on the news about most popular names in 2010 (where I live, not in the UK) and Lily was one of them.

Shame, it is a lovely name.

I love Lily! we are probably having it as a middle name for our DD3, as DH didn't want it for a first name. I would have it in a flash..it doesn't matter about popularity really, after all it's popular for a reason..it's lovely! :)

I have the same surname. We're going for Elizabeth for a girl. Lily is one shortened version of it but there's loads of others: Beth, Liz, Lizzie etc. The Queen signs her private letters as Lilibet, which I love (not sure it would be okay to use it though).

I prefer longer/proper names for birth certificates and then the child has more flexibility when it is older, especially a girl because her surname will probably change. For example, I know a Hillary Hill.

I have the same name as a person at work (first and last). I now shorten my name so people don't get confused and she uses the long version.

I've known an Elizabeth since chilldhood who is known as Lilibet (she's in her 30s now).
