We're about to hit the Due Date and I think we've come up with a boys and girls names. We've gone a bit Irish for some reason, but keen to hear your thoughts....

Fergus for a boy.
Bridget for a girl.

How do they sound?

Thanks!

I like Fergus but not keen on Bridget - possibly cos I knew a very uptight Bridget though...

Nightstar · 03/01/2011 19:24

I think they're both fabulous names.

Old fashioned yet not dated.

Well picked

dbg1 · 03/01/2011 19:34

Hehehehe - an uptight Bridget!

Thanks Nightstar - appreciate your response!

I have a Fergus and I can say-totally unbiased- of course- it is a great name.

Bridget- sounds a bit harsh to my ears, not so keen, sorry.

What about- Orla?

spidookly · 03/01/2011 20:49

I like both very much.

Dd2 second name = Bridget

dbg1 · 03/01/2011 20:55

Quite like both. Actually like Bridget alot.

Rhubarbgarden · 03/01/2011 22:31

Love both.

whoodoo · 03/01/2011 22:32

I have a fergus too and I ( naturally ) love it. Was a late choice for us but I get so many compliments on it. First king of Scotland apparently and also means man of strength. Amazingly mother in law who is in late 60's had never heard it and still spells it 'furgus' and I don't know how to tell her now she has it wrong.

BuntyPenfold · 04/01/2011 00:08

Fergus is great.

Bridget is awful ,sorry, but it's my name so I can say so.

DioneTheDiabolist · 04/01/2011 00:10

Not keen on either. Bridget sounds old fashioned. Fergus sounds like fungus.

Sorry, sorry, sorry.

DioneTheDiabolist · 04/01/2011 00:12

Alternatives could include Bridgin (pronounced Bridge een) which means "little Bridget" and Ferghal (Fergal).

ShoppingDays · 04/01/2011 00:17

Brigitte is nice, or Birgitta.

Atomant · 04/01/2011 00:24

Love them both

CheerfulYank · 04/01/2011 00:38

I think they're both very nice. :)

SeeyouontheothersideRay · 04/01/2011 06:15

I really like them both, especially Bridget, which could have cool nickname Bridie. I know a Fergus with the nickname Fuggy. I like the Ferg(h)al suggestion as well, but not Bridgin or the other variations - I'd say stick with Bridget, it's great.

dbg1 · 04/01/2011 09:41

Thanks again for the comments.

No need to apologise for finding them old-fashioned, that has helped me! We prefer the old-fashioned names.

Thanks also for the alternative names spellings. Some food for thought.

Fantastic.

I like them both Smile

mathanxiety · 04/01/2011 15:01

I really love them both.

Bridget or Brigid is the name I really wanted to call DD3. I would have used the nn Biddy, and it would have suited her down to the ground. Still kicking myself...

LetThereBeRock · 04/01/2011 15:04

Fergus is awful. Bridget is ok.

pointydog · 04/01/2011 15:08

I quite like them. Strong sounds.

A bit clumpy. Quite like Bridie.

JojoMags · 04/01/2011 15:43

I know they are completely separate names but I always think of Beatrice as the pretty version of Bridget. Softer and more elegant imo. Fergus is OK, though, although Fergie would be an unfortunate nn...

Takver · 04/01/2011 16:51

I like both a lot, also like the nn Bridie.

I've never heard Fergus shortened.

washngo · 04/01/2011 17:16

Fergus is great, keep saying this recently but is my bros name and he loves it (wants to call his son fergus if he has one!) and I love love the nn bridie so would def go for that.

MistletoeMush · 04/01/2011 17:30

I like Fergus but not sure about Bridget. It reminds me of Bridget Jones which I love but I think that it would annoy me not to be able to get over that connatation IYSWIM. Do like Bridie as a nm but not so keen on Biddy.
