Clarence

Can I have some opinions on Clarence please?
It seems to be the only name that dh sticks to, but I am not too sure it fits very well with ds's Amos and Eli?
Dh really loves it though, and I guess i like it too.
Do you think I ought to find a name that fits better? It is my preference to find a Hebrew name, but dh not bothered at all, and maybe I should relent on this one and not insist on Shem, Avi, Mordecai or Hershel? What do you think?

I love it, I think it goes well with the other names.

No, No, NO to Clarence. IMHO.

There is one line in Voyage of the
Dawn Treader that will always colour my view of that name. "There was a boy called Eustace Clarence Scrubb and he almost deserved it."

Mordecai is fab. How about Isaac, Abraham, Reuben, Ezra, Gilead?

LetThereBeRock · 03/01/2011 15:48

I really don't like Clarence. It's awful.

Of the other names you mentioned, the only one I like is Avi,which is lovely. The others are ghastly.

EauRouge · 03/01/2011 15:49

Clarence is very wet. Mordecai is brilliant though.

deemented · 03/01/2011 15:51

Not keen on Clarence either, sorry.

I think Seth or Moses would work well with your other boys names.

TabithaTwitchet · 03/01/2011 15:51

I love Clarence. But I think if the others have Hebrew names because you are Jewish, or because it is otherwise part of their cultural heritage, then the 3rd might feel left out, or different. Not really to do with names "going together", more about how your DS will see himself vis a vis his brothers and family background.

scurryfunge · 03/01/2011 15:51

No to Clarence - too Daktari.

onimolap · 03/01/2011 15:53

First thought was the cross-eyed lion, the second was the Duke drowned in the butt of malmsey.

If you want Hebrew names, how about Adam. Seth, Noah, Joshua, Jesse, Methuselah? Jeremiah? Jehosephat? Samuel, Daniel? Reuben, Napthalie, Issachar, Zebulun?Gad?

allbie · 03/01/2011 16:35

Clarence is a grower, it's one of those names that initially you think, no! And then, you think maybe...till finally, a firm yes.

tebbles · 03/01/2011 17:07

I dont like it.

Amos and Eli are much nicer. Clarence will feel like he's drawn the short straw in the name department.

I like Shem, Moses, Seth. Avi seems too close to Amos.

Mordecai or Hershel are too long and a bit too different, unless you can think of good nicknames for them.

usualsuspect · 03/01/2011 17:09

Clarence is awful

tummytickler · 03/01/2011 19:05

tebbles Mordecai would be Morrie, which I just adore. I think Hershel would just be Hersh (which dh likes).

Thanks for the other suggestions. We like Moses, but feel it is too close to Amos. I also like Abraham and Ezra, but would rather a different initial to ds's (although may relent on this if we really can't agree in anything!)

Thanks for replies - any more opinions would be great.

We have so many girls names! They are so easy!

Clarence, Clarry - bit girly no?

ShoppingDays · 03/01/2011 20:14

I like Clarence.

poppydaisy · 03/01/2011 21:55

Clarence is nice - classic, masculine and underused these days.

pointydog · 03/01/2011 22:05

awful

zozzle · 03/01/2011 22:15

Awful - v. v. preppy. But then I hate preppy public school names so you'd never catch me with a Henry (Harry is ok though), Hugo, Quentin or Rupert.

I love biblical names for boys personally.

Sorry but that's just me.

poppydaisy · 04/01/2011 09:39

See, I love Henry, Hugo, Quentin and Rupert, as well as Clarence Smile.

Just goes to show our different tastes...

rachel1970 · 04/01/2011 13:07

I like Clarence a lot. Also like Mordecai, but am less keen on Hershel (reminds me of Hershey chocolate).

ComeAlongPond · 04/01/2011 13:15

I like Clarence. I think. My first thought when I saw your thread title was, "Yes!" But now I am wavering.

I think perhaps it would only suit a certain type of boy, though I am not completely sure what that type would be.

Tbh though I don't think it goes with Amos and Eli, which would be more of a problem for me than anything else. I'd go with another similar name.

Maybe Noah?

telsa · 04/01/2011 15:02

Clarence is lovely - I know such a lovely Sri Lankan man caled Clarence, very clever and very gentle - so that colours my opinion. I think it goes well with the other names. Nn Renzi? Shem is great. I love Chaim/Hymie too on the Jewish front!

mathanxiety · 04/01/2011 15:24

Clarence is one of the wettest names around. Makes me think of purple velvet smoking jackets and general foppishness.

Clement is much nicer, imo, if there are elements of the sound that you like. Or Francis.

Not sure about Mordecai, but Hershel, Avi and Shem are very nice.

Other OT names:
Aram
Hosea
Ira
Jonah
Abner
Baruch
Dan
Hiram
Josiah
Isaiah
Jair
Judah
Samson
Samuel
Naphtali
Omri
Nicodemus (NT, Greek)

hellymelly · 04/01/2011 15:31

Clarence is cruel.I know a Mordecai and like it,Shem is good too.But not Clarence.Clive would be better.

JojoMags · 04/01/2011 15:48

Not keen on Clarence at all, sorry. Makes me think of that Paul Whiitehouse character in the girls dormitory!. Amos and Eli are really lovely, and I think Avi is fab!
