I'm due today. There's no sign. (It's because he doesn't have a name, yet Grin)

Here's the shortlist of baby names I'm considering that I generated with Mumsnet's Baby Name Finder. Let me know what you think.

Boys
Angus
Billy
Fergus
Hector
Leo
Moss
Patrick
Sterling
Tobias
Tom

Well - we have an Irish surname (beginning with F) and Scottish roots though we are English.

DH likes tradtional names really - the family name is James - but there are loads in the family (it's OK - just a bit obvious and I feel it's the easiest choice for DH).

I love Patrick - but DH has a nephew called Patrick (same surname) - and we also have a Joseph (Joe) named after DH's father and I'd like to give this one a name that he doesn't have to share with anyone else in the family.

DH is called William (there's also a nephew of the same name including surname) so that's why I suggested Billy (even though it's William officially). DH not keen on nns so he's not convinced.

(Can you tell I've been doing all the work here? DH merrily veto-ing).

DH's favourite is Angus. I think this is a fine name. I really like it. The problem is (and some of you might've read some of my previous ramblings), we have a 13 year old cat called Angus (he's my cat really, named before we were together). So I have reservations - especially as I spend much of my time shouting 'Stop it Angus!, 'What now, Angus?' (Or am I alone in having those sorts of conversations with cats?).

We also have two DDs Romilly and Nancy.

I'd probably choose something familiar but underused if I could and if I could get DH to agree - he's not really as stubborn and difficult as I'm making him sound, honest!

So - with that in mind, any suggestions?

Happy New Year to you all - I hope you're all having fun.

And who knew there were so many fans out there on MN?

Hmm - quite like Rusholme, autodidact...

Love your dds' names.

Ds2 (Joe) was going to be Nancy.

I think Hector goes with existing names. I like it. But my grandmother's cantankerous cat was called Hector...

AnnOnimous · 01/01/2011 01:39

Angus, Fergus and Patrick for me.

AnnOnimous · 01/01/2011 01:42

With Romilly and Nancy I like Rufus.

IvantaOuiOui · 01/01/2011 01:48

Patrick is lovely. I have a 6yo Patrick.

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 01/01/2011 02:42

I like Rufus too - particularly as it has the same derivation as my Father's name (Roy) which I can't/won't use (because I'm not keen on it) & as Joe is named after DH's father, I thought it would be nice. But you've guessed it, DH doesn't like it...

I really like Patrick, Angus and Tom (are you opposed to Thomas?)

I quite like Moss, Leo and Sterling.

I think you should avoid Fergus due to your surname.

I really dislike Hector and Tobias. Also Billy looks very childish as a full first name.

tebbles · 01/01/2011 18:29

Also I like the idea of naming him after the cat!! YOu will just have to start referring to the cat as 'Angus-the-cat'.

JojoMags · 01/01/2011 18:34

Have you seen the IT Crowd. Please don't call him Moss!

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 01/01/2011 19:54

Yes - I have a thing about alliteration, too - not too keen on F F. No, not opposed to Thomas, would be in full on bc & DH keen on full names.

I'm pretty sure the cat wouldn't object - just wondering if I could get my head around it.

No - don't watch The IT Crowd - but he's the one with big hair, isn't he?

NewYearNewPants · 01/01/2011 19:58

Billy and Romilly - NO.

I like Leo, Patrick and Tom.

Lovely girls names, btw.

rachxx · 01/01/2011 20:10

Leo is nice. I have a nephew called Leon

Rhubarbgarden · 01/01/2011 20:16

Angus! I think your cat would feel honoured.

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 01/01/2011 21:41

You see, that's why MN babyname board is great - of coure you can't have Romilly and Billy together - but it doesn't always occur to you when you're right in the middle of it.

Angus (the cat) will spend the next 2 years hiding under the bed regardless. Most people probably don't even know we've got a cat.

Boys
Angus- ugly, sounds like the name of a farm animal
Billy- goat gruff
Fergus- prefer Fergal
Hector- what if he's a scrawny, meek little thing?
Leo- either a fan of titanic or tb are we?
Moss- ok, bit surnamey
Patrick- sounds too much like 'dick'
Sterling- F1 fans??
Tobias- what's wrong with Toby?
Tom- boring but solid

mumatron · 01/01/2011 21:53

any luck picking a name yet?

we have not even had the conversation yet. it just ends in tears (dp's usually Grin )

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 01/01/2011 23:08
