Is Hector going to be the next big thing?

Typical. We almost decide on a name and rarely hear it or see it on this board, then over the past month it seems to be all over the name board! Is it massively on the rise? I don't mind popular names but it is a concern that it's the next big thing.

Agree with said, whose post made me smile.

"Some talk of Alexander, And some of Hercules, Of Hector and Lysander, And such great names as these".

Might you go for the full set?

'But the verb 'to hector' is used daily in the news and it has such a negative, sad meaning.'

But most people can tell the difference between a verb and a name, surely?

I don't get this 'horrible meaning' argument. Lots of names have horrible meanings or associations - people still use them Confused.

I think I may be noticing it more beacause I'm looking for it; seems it is on the rise though. Am now worried about the negative meaning!

Maybe should stick to Hugo?

I know one born yesterday...but he's in Scotland...!

If you like it 3nearly4 stick with it...it has taken you a while to select a name to go with your boys already..!

I Love Hector's house.

scottishmummy · 31/12/2010 00:30

i dont get all this asking random strangers what they think of name

lets face it
some hate
some love
some dont give hoot

certainly wouldn't alter plans based on what internet tap tappers think

no siree

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 31/12/2010 00:36

I suppose it's better to ask random strangers than family and friends (well, I'd rather ask random strangers than MY family and friends!) - yes some will like it some won't - I think it's good to air your own thoughts, hear others' before deciding. Once you do decide and then name the baby - people are less likely to say they don't like it - and if they do, you might not care too much anyway.

I like Hector - wish I could convince DH...

scottishmummy · 31/12/2010 00:56

or heck try going with your own judgement, radical

Nightstar · 31/12/2010 01:04

I always think of Hector from Monarch of the Glen. I love it, but we wont use it as it's about no.6 on our list

scottishmummy · 31/12/2010 01:10

we had lists.told no one our choices.had em.named em.

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic · 31/12/2010 01:12

I like it, but I know one Smile (Greek in my case)

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 31/12/2010 04:01

Well - what I mean is an example like this.

I posted yesterday - someone was asking about the name Isaac & I commented that parents of a friend of mine were teachers. They taught a boy named Isaac. Nothing wrong with that except when put with his surname Hunt it was a problem. His parents has possibly not said his name out loud. Sometimes asking for opinions is helpful. Of course, it only works, as in this case, if the surname is divulged too, But you perhaps understand my point.

We made the mistake of telling people our choices. Mostly, they didn't like them - we called them it regardless.
