Haven't read thread in order not to be influenced, so sorry if I repeat stuff.

Matilda - Waltzing Matilda
Harriet - Posh, arty, 'striking' (as in Harriet Vane from the Lord Peter Wimsey books)
Imogen - Posh, arty, beautiful (as in Imogen Stubbs)
Eleanor - American/Eleanor Farjeon
Elizabeth - Basically fantastic, but depends slightly on the shortening used

Oliver - posh, pleasant
Isaac - popular
Wilfred - 99 years young and the cheekiest chap in the nursing home
Sebastian - Brideshead
Blake - silver haired oil billionaire

maktaitai · 29/12/2010 00:14

BTW probably my choices if restricted to those would be Imogen and Isaac.

mrsfollowill · 29/12/2010 00:16

I love all of them apart from Wilfred and Blake. Wilfred - don't know why-
Blake - just think of Blake Carrington (another showing my age! Dynasty) or Blake's Seven
Please don't use these! Would be a crime when you have so many other fab names.

purpleiris · 29/12/2010 00:19

Haha these responses are making me giggle! These are names I either love (for possible future DC) or already have!!! So interesting to hear your thoughts!! thanks lots Smile Keep them coming!

Matilda - Roald Dahl book. Bit matronly
Harriet - my (deceased)cat
Imogen - a lovely girl (my DD) Grin
Eleanor - common (as in prevalent) two in every class
Elizabeth - a lovely middle class girl, prefer the Elisabeth spelling

Oliver - a boring boy with a boring name
Isaac - Hayes - Shaft (or chgef from South Park). Mummy thinks it's funky.
Wilfred - an old man, not grampa chic at all, would feel sorry for a boy called Wilfred (even though one of DS's midle names is Fred!)
Sebastian - brother of Dominic
Blake - Carrington, Dynasty - yuk yuk yukkity yuk

SarahStrattonsBaubles · 29/12/2010 00:21

Harriet - pleasant but plain girl
Imogen - name of girl next door and 'Imagine'
Eleanor - Rigby
Elizabeth - Hurley - I really like this name the more I say it

Oliver - I just think Oliver sounds like 'A liver', Twist.
Isaac - Newton & Hayes
Wilfred - don't know. Not very nice sounding.
Sebastian - the character from Little Britain
Blake - Carrington

Matilda I remember a cautionary tale (or was it a cautionary poem?) about a girl named Matilda who burned her house down and all that was left was her little red shoes Sad. It really fascinated me as a child I apparently drew many pictures of houses on fire and pairs of red shoes Hmm. I love the name -- Matilda was a very spunky, headstrong little Edwardian gal as far as I remember; if she had survived the fire I like to think she would have grown up into a Bright Young Thing of the 20s.
Harriet -- has a nice 18th century ring to it; stylish, imo, and I like the nn Harryo as in the DD of Georgiana 'the Duchess'.
Imogen -- plain Jane name, in the same category as Megan in my book.
Eleanor nice "Eleanor of Aquitaine' springs to mind. I think of it as an elegant medieval name.
Elizabeth -- Classic, eternal sort of name.

Oliver -- I think of this as an early modern Europe name; lovely sound.
Isaac -- lovely and lovely meaning. I think of Victorian self-made men from the North when I hear this name. Non-conformists.
Wilfred -- old man name that is only popular because there are too many Alfies and people are casting around for something along those lines but not 'Alfie'.
Sebastian -- martyr, Brideshead revisited, tragedy and off-putting skin conditions.
Blake -- American escapist TV series of the 70s or 80s; no positive thoughts, therefore. William Blake is edged out by the thoughts of 80s fashions and hair.

Tortington · 29/12/2010 03:23

ooooops -- twas Harriet and the matches and the little red shoes I was thinking of, from Sruwwelpeter. But I think Matilda would have fit into the story perfectly well too...

chelleyve · 29/12/2010 08:39

Elizabeth - My best friend as a child, who my little sister (she appears alot in my tales) called Dizzy as she couldn't pronounce it.

Oliver - The sweetest little boy I know - who is stubborn, headstrong but completely funny and adorable. (Is a contender for our LO)
Isaac - in the band Hanson? (showing my age)
Wilfred - the poet.
Sebastian - Ryan Phillipe character in Cruel Intentions

ZZZenAgain · 29/12/2010 08:54
