SilveryMoon · 23/12/2010 19:14

Yes, I don't know how to write them how they sound apart from Zane and Zain Confused but they are pronounced differently

SilveryMoon · 23/12/2010 19:15

No, I'm in the UK.

Firawla · 23/12/2010 19:59

Zane Zain and Zayn are all pronounced the same, dont get how it can be different??? the Arabic one is pronounced exactly the same as the english one

Personally i like it but prefer Zain spelling, it looks neater to me.

Agree with catinthehat2.

You know, every time I look at "threads I am on" I get a warm feeling, thanks JJJ. Xmas Wink

jellybeans · 24/12/2010 12:35

Quite like it, and far better tham being one of several Jacks, Harrys etc.

ShoshanaBlue · 26/12/2010 03:15

I know a couple of little girls called Zaynah, which I assume is the female version of Zayn. I think it's a nice name.

thumbplumpuddingwitch · 26/12/2010 03:18

don't really like it. But if you had to, I'd go with Zane rather than Zayn, Zayn looks a bit girly (like Robyn)

StiffyByng · 26/12/2010 15:22

I know a little boy called Zayn, but he is half Arabic and it suits him - doesn't seem at all naff. I think on a child without his cultural background, I would be a bit judgy.

highlighterpen · 26/12/2010 15:27

I 'know' (friend of my brother) a 'Zane'.

He flies Red 5 in the Red Arrows and is a bit yummy. Maybe just because he is a fighter pilot and I watched too much Top Gun as a teenager.

So on that basis, Zane is OK, but Zayn - no.

onimolap · 26/12/2010 15:34

I would think it was a respelling of Zane, and would think of the author Zane Grey. It's not a name I like, but there's nothing wrong with it.

fallingandlaughing · 26/12/2010 17:03

I prefer the spelling Zain. It is a nice name. If you don't have Muslim background it seems like a bit of a random choice, but it is up to you, not your midwife.

NiceShoes · 26/12/2010 17:15

At a push Zane, but Zayn is just chavvy.

Nightstar · 26/12/2010 20:40

I think the big question here is does 'thebigbang' who posted the question have any ethnic connection to such a non British name? I think names are really personal and should mean something to the child/family.

So if you are part Arabic or have any connection then yes, definitely go for Zane, it is a nice sounding name.

If not, then no, it's ridiculous!

But that's only my opinion, feel free to ignore it x

ShoshanaBlue · 27/12/2010 13:49

How can it be chavvy? It's just a popular Muslim name, unlike a lot of 'names' which are just random letters put together. Islam is not a colour - there are white muslims so I don't think it's necessarily an issue of having ethnic connections.

It's up to you what you call your child - not your midwife.

If you both like the name and it has a meaning for your family then I would say to go with it.

Secretwishescometrue · 27/12/2010 14:52

Prefer the spelling Zain which I think is a great name

CoteDAzur · 27/12/2010 14:56

Zainab/Zaynab/Zeynep is "a really popular Muslim name" for women. Knowing my "white Muslim" family, Arabs and other Muslims I have met over the years, I cannot think of any who would name their boy "beauty".

Zayn is an Arabic letter that look like a cross between the letter j and a sword.

To the best of my knowledge, in Arabic, Zayn is not a name but sometimes part of a title. Like in "Zayn ul-Abideen" (beauty/best of worshippers).

coldtits · 27/12/2010 14:57

ick.

Firawla · 27/12/2010 16:38

it is a name in arabic cote dazur and what's wrong with the meaning beauty have you not heard of boys called jamal and jameel too? its fairly normal?

CoteDAzur · 27/12/2010 16:47

Yes, I have, actually. Many Zaynabs but no Zayns where I'm from. It wouldn't happen, just too close to Zaynab.

skinnygirlNOT · 28/12/2010 00:17

Zain is an arabic name, not a muslim name. There are non muslim arabs called zain.

Please remember arab does not always equal muslim.

ShoshanaBlue · 28/12/2010 02:31

Zaynab/Zainab is a much nicer name.

If you like Muslim names then please consider Samir. I always associate it with Samir Rachid, my favourite Coronation Street character.
