What do you think of Winter as a boy's name? we're running out of ideas and this one seems particularly relevant.

Please no

ben5 · 24/12/2010 05:54

no .winter is a season not a name. sorry

onimolap · 24/12/2010 06:49

I was at school with 2children surnamed Winter. There's a long British tradition of using surnames as Christian names (particularly mother's maiden name to eldest child). Is that a tradition that would apply here? If so, then of course it's fine; but as pointed out above, the name would get mixed reactions, so perhaps better as a middle name (where most transferred surnames go these days anyhow).

ben5 April is a month, but accepted as a girl's name (like June, too). How odd that some month names are completely OK, not others. Maybe some brave souls just have to start a trend.

LaurieFairyonthetreeEatsCake · 24/12/2010 14:38

No you cannot call your child that - it's as good as Frosty, Frozen, Leafy and Bud.

I can only put it down to pregnancy hormones and really you should have a mince pie till you calm down. Xmas Grin

I actually think it's quite nice, though wouldn't use it myself as it would sound silly/odd with my surname (or DPs for different reasons).
Surnames are something to think about if you're giving a first name that sounds a bit like a surname, will people keep getting his name the wrong way round? My DP has a 'reversible' name i.e. his surname is a common male first name, and people constantly get it backwards, which he finds a bit annoying and is deterimined not to inflict on our DS if we have one!

I think it is a silly choice.

Nightstar · 24/12/2010 18:23

How about Noel?

That's a lovely name and very Christmassy

Or Holly for a christmas girl baby.

I think babys named after months is quite nice actually, April, May and June are common enough to now be unnoticable.

There is an excellent book where the character is called Thursday Next. Marvellous I thought!

ShoshanaBlue · 25/12/2010 03:15

Nightstar, I would have gone the whole hog and named the baby Ford Prefect. A much more sensible name than winter imo.

How about Robin, if you want a birth season reminder? (Not that you'll forget, I'm sure...) Xmas Grin

A1980 · 25/12/2010 19:51

It'd make a good middle name for your son.

I like it!
But I think it will become much more popular

hatebeak · 27/12/2010 18:00

I think it's quite elegant - and I believe it's a traditional name in the Channel Islands, maybe Jersey?

BerryinClover · 27/12/2010 19:41

How about Wynter?

FAOnTelly · 28/12/2010 19:32

Passable for a girl, but a complete no-no for a boy.

scrivette · 29/12/2010 15:26

I like it, but then again I like different (or as my Dad says, stupid!) names, so probably best to ignore me!

BendyBobCratchit · 29/12/2010 15:30

Er..no. I don't like it much as a season either.

Of course there was the surname de Winter in Rebecca so you might be on to something..
