I like Sasha but sounds too nnish on its own.

Suggestions?

I think it's actually short for Alexandra, but i know someone called Saskia who pronounces it Sasha

MentalFloss · 21/12/2010 18:02

I thought Alexandra as well but I know someone called Natasha who goes by Sasha

tammytoby · 21/12/2010 18:06

Normally it is a boys' nickname for Alexander. I guess it could be used for Alexandra as well?

minipie · 21/12/2010 18:07

I knew a Sashareen once, shortened to Sasha

Nightstar · 21/12/2010 18:09

Natasha makes much more sense! Go with that

KittyTwoShoes · 21/12/2010 18:18

I would have said Alexandra as well, but Natasha does make sense!

Umnitsa · 21/12/2010 19:16

Definitely Alexandra or Alexander!

-asha is a typical Russian suffix for nicknames / endearments (Maria / Masha, Natalia / Natasha, Daria / Dasha, Alexei / Aliosha etc.)

mamaloco · 21/12/2010 19:23

SaSha for girls (alexandra)
SaCha for boys (alexander)
Umnitsa is spot on!

wigglesrock · 21/12/2010 20:31

Sacha is the nn for Alexander (typically Russian) same as using Sandy for Alexander. For a girl I would assume Alexandra. I like Sasha for a girl, I wouldn't worry about it being nicknamey. I am 32 weeks pregnant and have mentioned it to husband a few times, but he associates it with Barrack Obama's daughter.

I would say Alexandra, too.

PracticallyImperfectInEveryWay · 21/12/2010 23:54

DD is Sasha, so to me it's a name in its own right. I've never been asked what it's short for. If you like it more than the long versions, why not just use it?

FrustratedHippy · 22/12/2010 00:01

My DD is Sacha ( i liked that spelling better and back then there was no Baron-Cohen) and she is Alexandra.

We alternate but despite LOVING Alexandra I did not like Alex so she is Sacha to most of the world!

FrustratedHippy · 22/12/2010 00:03

deffo NOT Natasha

Sasha/Sacha/ Sascha is shortened version of Aleandra/der

Sasha is a NN for Alexandra (well, at least in Russia and Eastern Europe). it is too casual on its own, although i have met a few americans (mostly jewish) who have this as a full name. Love Alexandra, but would not name Sasha as a full name...

herhonesty · 22/12/2010 22:17

i think sasha is a lovely name on its own. natasha isnt a very nice name and alexandra isnt that nice either.

tammytoby · 22/12/2010 22:28

I know too many male Sashas (short for Alexander) that I can't associate it with girls (yet) Smile.

Natasha is lovely but wouldn't generelly be shortened to Sasha (although I know the Obamas have).

thefurryone · 23/12/2010 11:01

It's not a name that I would immediately associate as being a nickname, but if you did go with Alexandra then it would give your DD more options if she ever decided she wasn't keen.

blackeyedsusan · 24/12/2010 02:20

alexandra. Did consider it on one of our lists, shortened to sasha

glovesoflove · 24/12/2010 07:03

Have an Alexandra so biased but it's a great name with loads of nn potential - I really like Sasha.

onimolap · 24/12/2010 07:16

I picture it as entirely a boys' name too.

But if that's the sort of name you want, then I'd say it would go with Alexandra.

mopsyflopsy · 24/12/2010 11:13

Sascha is a very common boys name in Germany, I think the Russian spelling is also Sascha.

In France it is spelt Sacha (as in French you pronounce the ch as sh).

I would find it weird meeting a female Sascha/Sasha/Sacha but I'm sure I could get used to it.
