Opinions please on this very welsh name. Dh thinks it's a bit harsh sounding but I rather like it. It means much loved one in welsh for a girl by the way!

I have heard Angharad which I think is quite nice if one likes Welsh names? Is Amgharad a version of this?

SmacSmackedSanta · 18/12/2010 20:25

is it not spelt with N rather than M ?
Angharad?
I find it hard to get my mouth around.

onepieceoflollipop · 18/12/2010 20:25

It's lovely and I have a lovely intelligent friend called Angharad

ilsalund · 18/12/2010 20:35

It's a beautiful name. All the Angharads I have known have been lovely.

FrannyandZooey · 18/12/2010 20:40

it's lovely but it is hard for people to say right
if it is going to bother you when people pronounce it wrong for years and years then don't do it
(i speak from experience)

snownelly · 18/12/2010 20:50

Yes I like it - but Im welsh & can pronounce it

onepieceoflollipop · 18/12/2010 20:52

I think I can pronounce it but not sure. Can anyone spell out phonetically how it is pronounced please?

AllieW · 18/12/2010 20:57

I knew a girl at school with the name - I thought it was pronounced Ann-Harrod, but I'm probably wrong!

siilk · 18/12/2010 20:58

I love it. Welsh girls names are lovely. However, I have been unable to use girls names as I have two boys; Rhodri and Brychan Smile. I live in welsh speaking Wales so I can pronounce it.

Thanks Funky, my father is Welsh but I am not familiar with Welsh pronunciation.

Angharad said in a harsh Midlands accent - where I live,(with a hard G and the end part "harrad") wouldn't do the name justice imo!

ShoppingDays · 18/12/2010 21:09

Sorry, I don't like it.

NurseGladys · 18/12/2010 21:16

There used to be a news presenter in Wales called Angharad, and I'm not so keen on the name, to be honest. What about Cariad or Blodwyn??

A1980 · 18/12/2010 21:21

It's different.

But people wont know how to say it. I met a girl at school with the name and I thoguht her name was Anne Harrod. So i called her Anne until she corrected me!

Jic · 18/12/2010 21:31

Yes it seems there would be difficulty in pronouncing it if not living in Wales! Like cariad actually

alemci · 18/12/2010 21:32

i like that name. remember Demelza in Poldark was played by the actress with that name.

NurseGladys · 18/12/2010 21:35

I think Cariad would be easy for non-Welsh people, too I think it means 'love', a term of endearment.

pettyprudence · 18/12/2010 21:37

Love it, but I am welsh and possibly a bit biased! Are you in Wales? If so, slightly less chance of mis-pronunciation (only slight though!) To me though, welsh is pretty phonetic, no?

HelenaRose · 18/12/2010 23:31

I knew a woman called this; she called herself AJ instead (I assume that J was her surname) - utterly hated her name that nobody could pronounce.

cumbria81 · 19/12/2010 06:17

I am Welsh and think it's an ugly name

seeker · 19/12/2010 06:49

My nephew's girlfriend is called Anwen, which I think is lovely. And easy to spell and pronounce for non Welsh speakers!

saffy85 · 19/12/2010 09:46

I had a friend at school with this name. She hated it, and while I don't hate the name I don't think anyone pronounced it here (North London) the way kit was meant to be pronounced. She shortened it to 'Arry Harry.
