Douglas, Malcolm, Donald

These are dh's suggestions.
I rather like all of them, especially Douglas and Malcolm.
However ds's have quite unusual Hebrew names, so not sure they will fit. I don't want names that match, but would it be too odd to have 2 Hebrew names and then a Scottish classic?

What is you favourite and why?
Thanks

I'm sorry - not keen on any of them.

Douglas best I suppose.

woolymindy · 09/12/2010 10:02

Douglas

the others...hmmmm

TheUnmentioned · 09/12/2010 10:04

no no no to malcolm and donald, douglas would be doug or dougie probably, i quite like those.

i think it might ba a bit odd having 2 hebrew then a scots name, are you or your dh scottish?

tummytickler · 09/12/2010 10:12

dh is Scottish. I pressed for Hebrew names with ds's, but we are not really agreeing anymore with me favouring Shem and he Abraham. I think he would really like a trad Scottish name though.
I still want to call a ds Shem, but I guess if I cannot have a nice Hebrew name, then these are what I would go for.
I still think they might sit oddly with ds's though.

Like Donald the best :)

LoopyLoopsOfSparklyFairyLights · 09/12/2010 10:50

Sorry, but I think all 3, especially Malcolm and Donald, are awful.

FestiveOrganisoid · 09/12/2010 10:53

DS is Douggie, so I'd say Douglas obviously.

I think Malcolm is particularly awful, sorry

LowLevelBahHumbug · 09/12/2010 10:55

Douglas is ace.

I would consider how they sound together rather than being of different styles. Are they easy to say together and do they sound nice?

But of course, most important is that you like it.

TabithaTwitchet · 09/12/2010 10:58

I love Douglas, it is a great name. Other two are OK, although I probably wouldn't choose them myself. Donald is a family name for us so DH has suggested it as a middle name. But I somehow can't get Donald Duck out of my head Grin.

I do think if the other two names are very obviously different then it is a bit strange - unless you give a Hebrew míddle name. Your son might feel like the odd one out, or feel that he has less of a connection to his Jewish(?) roots.

tummytickler · 09/12/2010 11:03

Tabitha - He would definately have Hebrew surname, probably Reuben after my maternal grandfather. Douglas Reuben sounds rather nice actually, now I think about it.

Other ds's are Eli and Amos. Eli, Amos and Douglas.

I just do not know if it works.

Douglas. I went to school with a very nice Douglas,so I have very positive associations with it,and it has a nicer sound than the other two.

Komondor · 09/12/2010 16:22

Malcolm is my favourite although I like Douglas too.

Donald Duck springs to mind with the name Donald.

RockinRobinBird · 09/12/2010 16:41

I like Douglas and Donald a lot. Can take or leave Malcolm but it's certainly not hideous.

Gogopops · 09/12/2010 18:17

My dad is called Douglas - can't actually imagine a baby called that although I do like the name now. (I was always embarrassed of his name when I was a kid!!) Blush

AnnOnimous · 09/12/2010 19:10

I have a Donald, it suits him

AllieW · 10/12/2010 10:10

LOVE Malcolm. I suppose Malachi might be vaguely close. You could always go for a Hebrew middle, I guess. Malcolm Isaac, for example.

selfaddressedenvelope · 20/02/2011 12:29

Glad somebody likes Malcolm. My fiance's name! And very regal.

'Devotee of St Columba'. How do you feel about St Columba?

Donald becomes Donny which I think is lovely.

I think family names are important though, does your baby's father have any of these names in his family tree? You could honour someone.

ValiumSandwich · 20/02/2011 12:36

LOVE Donald. Really quite like Douglas. I love Bruce as well. Love Scottish boys' names. They're great.

Columba i would like but not in my own family. it's too floaty or somthing. Not keen on Malcolm at all.

AnnOnimous · 20/02/2011 19:41

You could use Colm, which is a short form of Columba and Malcolm.

Even though I have a Donald, I think I too prefer Reuben with your other sons' names.

SilkStalkings · 20/02/2011 19:51

Was going to say they're all quite old mannish names but then so are your other two so why not one of them?

Prefer Duncan though personally as a manly Scottish name.

mistressploppy · 20/02/2011 19:55

They're all great names. I have a Hebrew name, as does my DS, and my 12mo nephew is Douglas. I also went to school with brothers called Dougal and Malcolm which I always thought was a cool duo.

I don't see a problem with any of the names fitting with your older DSs. All good solid real names.
