What do you think of Joy for a first name? I had really liked it as a middle name, but have found myself liking it more and more for a first name.

anamaria22 · 03/12/2010 08:17

sorry, meaning.

lottiejenkins · 03/12/2010 08:20

My friends had a little girl in September and they called her Joy... she really suits it!!

LaTristesse · 03/12/2010 11:50

It's lovely, go for it!

tstar · 03/12/2010 12:05

My Nana has gone by the name Joy almost her whole life born a different name.
Joy suits her sooooo well I hope I am like her in the future. She is young at heart, loves to laugh and very motherly. Go for it.

What if your Joy is a cool, grumpy, scowly, grouchy, goth type though? A kid called Joy didn't invite my son to her party once and he was furious and said "hurrumph. I've never seen much Joy in her." They were around 7 irrc.

Goingspare · 03/12/2010 12:10

I think it's a lovely name. I have met one baby Joy, and was very struck by the name.

OctaviaOstrichJollster · 03/12/2010 12:23

I do like the name.
Sadly have known 3 Joys - all pretty joyless. Coincidence... Xmas Hmm

BigZing · 03/12/2010 13:00

Such a lovely, simple, joyous Grin name.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 03/12/2010 13:24

Beautiful name. We toyed with it for our DD, but as she has a single sylablly sirname it didn't sound right.

ShoppingDays · 03/12/2010 16:18

Lovely name.

Mousesmummy · 04/12/2010 00:11

A very close friend of mine has Joy as a middle name and absolutely detests it?! Don't know why as it is lovely but she says it was always like being called 'Happy' but I guss it's no different to beig called Grace or similar?
I like it fwiw

Hedwig3 · 04/12/2010 11:02

Really love it.

highlystrung · 04/12/2010 19:25

I was sat next to a Joy in the 'Overcoming Depression' course the doc sent me on for PND. Found it very hard to keep a straight face as she sat there with her name sticker on. Put me right off virtue names but did help cheer me up!

notanumber · 04/12/2010 21:41

It's quite a lot to live up to though, isn't it?

When she's in a sulk or pensive or angry there will always be some smartarse pointing out that she isn't exhibiting much joy.

There was a recent article in The Guardian by someone who called their daughter Merrily and she hates it and wants to be called Victoria instead.

"We liked the way it carried music with it, along with connotations of laughter and joy ? what was not to like? Merrily has told me since that it's those very associations with her name that have caused her the most irritation."

Dolanette · 04/12/2010 21:56

There is a Joy in my DD's class. I like it!

panettoinydog · 04/12/2010 22:11

Quite like it, although a bit dippy.

And there was that Joy in Drop teh dead Donkey which might warn you off. Imagine a teenage Joy...

Sanesometimes1 · 04/12/2010 22:23

lovely name - go for it.
