Daphne or Josephine?

I love both but dh feels that Josephine is too commonplace and we might fight over nicknames, as I love Posy and he doesn't. He favours Daphne. Which do you prefer?

Do you know any young girls with either name?

I'd forgotten that until now millymae! Grin

Sanesometimes1 · 04/12/2010 22:56

ok, according to 13yr old dd - both absolutely awful, hideous, immediately makes her think of old people and scooby doo. sorry x

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 04/12/2010 23:00

Neither. They are both horrible - sorry.

tallwivglasses · 04/12/2010 23:23

I love Daphne. Do it. There'll be no other Daphnes in the class.

Baublepink · 04/12/2010 23:24

I like Daphne. Puts me in mind ofsophisticated chic and movie stars of past glamourous eras. I don't think of Scooby Doo or nn Daffy etc at all. I think French, beautiful girl wearing chic LBD with pearls, Audrey Hepburn.

Josephine is also nice. There's lots of potential for nn (Jo, Jo-Jo, Josie, Posy, Phina). I like Posy. It makes me think of a posy of flowers, what could be prettier! It's good to be different Smile

SkylineDrifter · 05/12/2010 00:59

Josephine is lovely and lends itself to a number of nns, should you want to shorten it.

Don't like Daphne - it makes me think immediately of Daphne Broon in The Broons

MsMarple · 05/12/2010 01:13

You have to go with Josephine, that way everytime she says 'Mu-uuum can I stay up to watch X-Factor' (or similar) you get to say 'Not tonight, Josephine' and chuckle to yourself like a loon.

Years of endless fun to look forward to Wink

CountBapula · 05/12/2010 01:57

Love Daphne. Will use it if I have a DD. Know it raises eyebrows though!

MilkNoSugarPlease · 05/12/2010 02:17

Josephine is SO due a comeback!

expectingno3 · 05/12/2010 09:19

I have a Delphine! We call her Delphy for short. I think its an elegant name for an older girl / woman, and Delphy is cute for a little one. Never thought for one minute people would think it 'cheap sounding'.

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 05/12/2010 10:38

Am so Envy at your Delphine - it's beautiful Smile. Sadly vetoed by DH, the swine.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 05/12/2010 11:45

Both are fab but I prefer Daphne.

tessofderbyville · 05/12/2010 12:00

Josephine is lovely!

loobylu3 · 05/12/2010 18:03

I love Daphne and I agree with baublepink re the associations.

Josephine is nice enough but not a personal favourite.

Have you considered Penelope? It seems to be the perfect compromise between these two names as it is long and elegant with plenty of nick names, like Josephine and arises from Greek mythology like Daphne.

MadameCastafiore · 05/12/2010 18:04

I love Daphne - reminds me of the pretty one in Scooby Doo1

ShoppingDays · 05/12/2010 19:06

I like both but prefer Josephine.

Daphne is certainly underused and a very pretty nature name.

Rhubarbgarden · 05/12/2010 19:21

I really like both but think I slightly prefer Daphne because it's shorter and is one of my favourite plants.

Komondor · 05/12/2010 19:32

Josephine (Josie as nn)

pranma · 05/12/2010 20:27

I love both and also think they go well together:
Daphne Josephine
Josephine Daphne

Panzee · 05/12/2010 20:30

I also thought of Some Like It Hot, but in a good way! I like them both.

gingerwig · 05/12/2010 20:31

both Sassy and VERY feminine.
Makes me want twin daughters!

Hedwig3 · 06/12/2010 12:49

Daphne

dreamingofsun · 06/12/2010 13:50

daphne reminds me of old people and mothballs.

MissHavishamsDress · 09/12/2010 21:58

Phew, thanks for comments. Think we are def going for Daphne, now, as dh doesn't like the nn Posy for Josephine blah blah so despite some of the negative comments, we're agree with baublepink and looby lu, and also love the beguilingly scented Daphne plant. We're happy to break the mould and are confident that any future dd would carry her name off with her own style! Now for middle names:

thinking Daphne Luna
or Daphne Lilac
possibly Daphne Penelope (Penelope's my mother's name looby loo) - but would they both be too similar?

I like Daphne a lot. Really not keen on Josephine as I don't like feminised male names (it rather suggests we can't even have a name of our own but have to draw on those of blokes to me). In fact, I vastly prefer Josette (nn Josie) to Josephine as I think it is prettier, but there you are.
