How about Neve?

DS is Finn, DD1 has a name from my culture (although her second name is Maeve), and ampg with DC3.
DH is Irish but we live abroad, so I can't have Niamh as it would just be a nightmare.

I quite like Neve. Would love some feedback. Thanks!

Assumpta?

Colette?

I think Neve is a lovely name.

If it were me I admit I'd go for traditional spelling ( though strange for non-Irish eyes ! )

As you live abroad feel simpler spelling is easily justified.

swanandduck · 04/12/2010 22:20

Neve sounds makey up American. I wouldn't use it unless you're going to spell it properly.

I'm Irish and some of the suggestions I've read on here are no more Irish......

Komondor · 05/12/2010 19:42

Love the name.

LOLA1545 · 05/12/2010 23:49

I loved the name name Neve and wanted that for our daughter, (who took 3 weeks to name) my OH wasn't so keen and eventually agreed to it until he came up with the name Lola which now, can't imagine her with any other. Still love Neve tho....

Niamh is pronounced Nee-uv

Neve would be Nev?

Not the same name at all. The Irish spelling is much prettier and has meaning, whereas the 'Neve' name means nothing at all, as pointed out by another poster.

tigersteapot · 07/12/2010 05:38

Niamh is a beautiful name.

FWIW, my DD has a gaelic name & we live overseas. We thought long & hard before we named her, knowing that she will have a lifetime of misspellings & mispronunciation. In the end we decided to go with the name we loved, that relects my (and her) roots & culture. Hopefully she will love her name as much as we do.

FattyArbuckel · 07/12/2010 06:22

Neve is lovely to rhyme with cleave presumably, why would it be pronounced Nev?!!!

I prefer the pronounciation snd the spelling to niamh but them I'm not Irish!

I find Irish names hard to pronounce and to spell.

Superfly · 07/12/2010 09:28

Then it would be spelled Neeve to rhyme with cleave?

Also in some languages the 'e' sometimes has an 'a' sound - which could then make it pronounced 'Ne-va'. More confusion!

I suppose the best thing is to go for a name which can reflect your heritage without causing spelling/ pronounciation issues.

Then again - it is your choice to spell a name how you want, but opinions on how a particular name should be spelled will always be an issue on somewhere like here. Personally I can't stand the mis-spelling of names.

tammytoby · 07/12/2010 09:39

Neve = Nev
Neeve = Neeve (rhyme with leave)

I would use the correct spelling Niamh - people will get used to it Smile.

NL3 · 07/12/2010 09:46

Dara or Cara would be fine. I would only spell it Niamh

mugggletoeandwine · 07/12/2010 09:54

Use the correct spellling, people will learn.
I have a Niamh and people comment on how lovely it is, and those who know the spelling say it's great that I used it and not a made up one. My Irish Doctor in particular.

nopinkplasticshite · 09/12/2010 12:40

Surely if you are living in France and using a "non-French" name, you are going to have to spell it anyway? So you may as well go with Niamh if you like it! Smile But I don't see anything wrong with Neve either, in fact, I think it's nice.
What about Erin or Shannon if you want a nod the Irish heritage?

mopsyflopsy · 09/12/2010 12:47

What pronounciation do you want:
Neeve?
Nev?
I thought Niamh was pronounced Neeve.

nopinkplasticshite · 09/12/2010 12:52

Sorry, I meant "a nod TO the Irish heritage".
And just thought of another ... Tara.

Whitethorn · 09/12/2010 16:34

I like it

fifi25 · 20/01/2011 16:01

My 9yr olds called Niamh pronounced Neeve. I loved the name but after 9 year of her constantly being called Ni-am, Nee-am it gets irritating. She has to constantly tell people what her name is and it cant be nice for her. I would think carefully about picking an Irish name. My daughter often says she hates her name fuelled by a teacher who everyday calls her Nee-am and the kids laugh. My younger daughters are Romilly and Connie, nice and easy to pronounce.
