Came across this name whilst watching the tv. DH said he would like that if we ever had another DS. Won't be for a while as DD is only 4 months old.
Just wanted to see what other people think.
Haven't heard it for a while?
BTW have I got the right spelling? I know there is a few.

Love it. Especially that spelling.

Its my baby brother's name (he's 30 lol)

AFAIK there are a gazillion spellings!

LadyThompson · 29/11/2010 12:33

It's DP's name but he is an Alistair. Classic and not too common at the same time. Nice.

thefurryone · 29/11/2010 13:07

Good name and that would be my prefered spelling but it isn't the only way!

talkingnonsense · 29/11/2010 13:09

I like it spelt Alasdair!

poobumfartbollocks · 29/11/2010 13:32

I was told AlasDair was the posh way to spell it

flopsy1974 · 29/11/2010 15:25

Which one is the original spelling? Does anybody know!

Gorgeous name! I like it best as Alistair (as that's the way I pronounce it- Alice-stare) and shortened to Ali as a pet name. I don't think there is an "original" spelling per say as the variations in spellings are originally regional so each one would have been the original for that locality.

MelinaM · 29/11/2010 23:36

Lovely name, yes there are various spellings ...here are a few!
Alastair - I prefer this one!
Alasdair
Alasdhair
Alastaire
Alastar
Alastor
Alistair
Alistaire
Alister
Alasdhair

AphraBen · 30/11/2010 01:36

Love it and all the nicknames that come with it (including Stairs...)

Nospringflower · 30/11/2010 07:24

I like it but it is quite popular in Scotland.

EauRouge · 30/11/2010 08:30

It was one of my first choices if DC2 turns out to be a boy but DH didn't like it. I like the spelling Alasdair, I don't think I'm posh though.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 30/11/2010 09:06

Cracking name. Strong and timeless. I like it.

WeeScotsLass · 30/11/2010 11:03

Hey Nospring - whaddyamean BUT it is quite popular in Scotland. It's a Scottish name - and a fine one. Just for the record Alistair means "man's defender". It is the Scottish spelling of Alasdair, which in turn is the Gaelic form of Alexander!

Nospringflower · 30/11/2010 14:29

I know!! Just the OP said she hadnt heard it for a while whereas I hear it all the time - lovely as it is.

SausageMonster · 30/11/2010 22:00

Great name

IWantToBeAFairyWhenIGrowUp · 04/12/2010 07:04

Lovely name and I know 2 of my generation (30's) and there is one in DD's class (3)

smoggii · 11/12/2010 10:50

We've been told we're having a girl but if there has been an error when scanning this is our emergency boys name.
I love it, I had a friend in sixth form called Alastair and he was just the nicest guy so i've always liked it.
It's classic but (at the moment) not massively popular, plus it's the only boys name me and DH could agree on.

Secretwishescometrue · 11/12/2010 11:04

Lovely name :) my uncle is one and we call him Ali for short and I'm totally bias as he's the nicest person on the planet but def a great name!

LittleWhiteSnowWolf · 11/12/2010 17:56

I love it, but DH won't let me use it on any potential future boy as its the name of a character in Dragon Age (xbox game) who I have a bit of a crush on

(Yes I know he's made of pixels, but stil...)

RockLovesMincePies · 11/12/2010 20:29

My dp is an Alistair, I think it's a lovely name. :)

tassisssss · 11/12/2010 20:30

I love it. That's the best spelling IMO! It's our ds's middle name (was my dh's dad's name)

MelinaM · 11/12/2010 20:32

Alasdair is the original Scottish spelling flopsy1974, and Alistair is the most common English spelling of the name.
Good luck choosing! xox

AllieW · 12/12/2010 21:25

It's the name of my friend's 3 year old and I really like it!

Edmundo · 12/12/2010 21:27

I love it and it's on my list. Spelt Alasdair.

CalaLilly · 14/12/2010 15:09

MelinaM, I don't agree with you as I think depends which baby books you read. Personally, I've met more alistair's/ alastair?s in Scotland than I have Alasdair's and would associate the t with the Scottish spelling and the d with the more anglicised spelling!
