What comes to your mind when you hear the name Dimitri? DH seems to like this name and I keep thinking of the Russian president. Please let me know your thoughts.

i would assume there was a russian connection to your family, although i do like the name

megonthemoon · 26/11/2010 16:56

The new spy in Spooks

Psammead · 26/11/2010 16:57

Oh I knew a lovely looking fellow with this name. He was Greek. Good associations for me. Although I would wonder if there were non-British roots in his family.

IWouldNotCouldNotWithAGoat · 26/11/2010 17:14

People will always ask 'Oh, whereabouts is your family from?' Which isn't necessarily a problem!

StealthPolarBear · 26/11/2010 17:15

nice name with greek associations to me

serenity · 26/11/2010 17:19

I know a few Greek ones (including a very, very nice Corfu barman) but generally I think of Misha Dmitri Tippens Krushnic and then giggle like a 14 year old with a crush Blush

Lovely name. I've had connections with Greece (and Greek men) for a while now and I'm always impressed by the elegance of their names.

ThatllDoPig · 26/11/2010 19:33

Honestly first thing to come to mind is a slimebaggy greek waiter.

But I'm sure that is just prejudice from somewhere.
I can imagine a little boy Dimitri being gorgeous.

Haha... Love your comments!! Thank you so much, everyone! I should make DH read them to convince him that maybe it is not such a good idea to name the baby Dimitri...

Would you not spell it Dmitri, as in Shoshtakovich?

I love it, and would use it if I had a son. Makes my heart sing.

minipie · 26/11/2010 19:47

I like it, but I would assume you were Russian

(Dimitri, Dmitry, Dimitry are all known spellings. There are probably others too)

Islandsinthestream · 26/11/2010 20:02

Greek hospitality operative (restaurant/bar etc)

And Del Amitri (the band) (yes I know, odd connection!)

I don't get a Russian connection in my head but obviously many others do.

lilly13 · 26/11/2010 20:10

The Greek / East European spelling is Demitri, Demetri or Dimitri (from Greek Demetrious or Dimitrios)... The Russian spelling is Dmitry or Dmitri. However, they all sound similar, as you have correctly pointed out...

First thing I thought was 'oh that band Dimitri!' Doh Blush

Now I've been reminded it was actually Del Amitri, I'm liking Dimitri as a name! What is it's meaning...?

magbags · 26/11/2010 21:34

Dimitri Martin (the comedian). Quite like it.

MelinaM · 26/11/2010 23:47

Umm Russia instantly popped into my mind when I saw the name Dimitri! Nice name thoughSmile

JBrd · 28/11/2010 23:06

But wouldn't it get shortened to 'Dim'...?

BuntyPenfold · 29/11/2010 11:04

I thought Dim too....

lilly13 · 29/11/2010 16:58

Dim sounds weird... Greeks just say Dimitri, while East Europeans and Russians say Dima or Mitia (not sure I like either to be honest)...
