Before you ask they are mostly foreign names. Are they too weird for this country or it's just in my head?

Orla
Edua
Imola
Lelle
Viola

MerryM - Isla is way too popular for me, unfortunately, I'm a bit weird like that

Orla and Viola (twelfth night edition) are lovely. The others are not nice, sorry. I can't get past Ayrton Senna for Imola and Lelle is just plain odd.

mrsnoname · 22/11/2010 22:38

OK, so Edua is not so much of a favourite anymore Sad

It has to be Vivienne. Stunning name. Vivi (pronounced vee-vee) or Veni for nns.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 22/11/2010 22:41

Viola! :)

That's lovely.

MuffinMouse · 22/11/2010 22:43

Viola is beautiful. I really like Orla. I don't think it is at all old fashioned. It would be hard to choose between them.

The others just don't work in English for me.

mrsnoname · 22/11/2010 22:43

catin - agree about the name, but fear that one day it'll become the next Olivia or Isabelle

Please don't go with the suggestion of Aoife, the name Evie is officially full Grin

Bunbaker · 23/11/2010 07:26

I like Orla and Viola. I am a Shakespeare philistine and wasn't aware of an alternative pronunciation. I would have pronounced it Vi-oh-la.

How can Isla be considered too popular. I don't know any.

I'm not keen on Edua at all and Imola reminds me of Enola as in Enola Gay. It is, as others have pointed out, also a race track.
I'm not sure about Lelle. I would have pronounced it the French way so it would sound like a nickname to me.

diddl · 23/11/2010 08:10

Like Orla & Viola.

Elle nicer than Lelle imo.

One of the nicest people I ever knew was Ella.

mrsnoname · 23/11/2010 08:29

Morning ladies,
Yepp, I think Imola is now officially out of the race Wink.
Bunbaker - I know at least three little Islas in my part of the world. It's a lovely lovely name, but a no-go for me due to increasing popularity Sad

Cannot go with Aoife even if we wanted to, it's pretty but too Irish for our backgrounds.

I have just thought of another old favourite of mine:
Adrienne or Adrienn
What's the consensus on this one?
If I'm honest, I prefer names that don't end on an 'a'...

OP posts:
seeker · 23/11/2010 08:35

Oh, honestly, even on mumsnet nobody's going to call they child Viola and pronounce it Vile-er, are they?

Vile, Viler. Vilest.

Go for Violet. You are unlikely to meet many (any?) people like me who have a composting toilet - the main brand of which is Biolet!!!!!!

mrsnoname · 23/11/2010 09:59

Thanks, Violet has been suggested a number of times. Only we're more keen on Viola because of its uniqueness.

Just remembered cannot use Adrienne either, the children have a second cousin with that name.

Orla - very pretty and not too out of the ordinary
Edua - ugly
Imola - puts me in mind of 1) moles and 2) emollient
Lelle - everyone will call her lellie
Viola - Was a character in Twelfth Night. Quite like it but also think it a bit pretentious.

Tabitha is ok, would get shortened to Tabby.
mrsnoname if you prefer names not to end in an 'a', then why are you considering Orla, Edua, Imola and Viola?
Confused

mrsnoname · 23/11/2010 10:34

hi simone - I said 'prefer', not 'want', unfortunately girls names not ending in an 'a' are few and far between in most languages. Plus at the end of the day you also have to like a name, just because it doesn't end in an 'a', I might not necessarily like it.

So are these Hungarian names, apartfrom Orla? I'm open to Hungarian names, i think the UK can cope but these ones don't really rock my boat.

Any others you're considering then?

ZZZenAgain · 23/11/2010 12:36

here

here you go, everyone can choose their favourite Hungarian girls name but no idea how you pronounce them. Starting iwth "A", how do we like Aliz?

Psammead · 23/11/2010 12:43

Lelle is sweet. Also like Tabitha a lot.

mrsnoname · 23/11/2010 12:59

ZZZ - oops, got too much time on your hands?!, 'cause you're not really rocking my boat either.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 23/11/2010 16:41

What about Aine (Onya)

frakkinup · 23/11/2010 17:11

Not Viola if you're going to pronounce it like the musical instrument!

Memories of poor Viola who played the viola....

Orla yes, the others no.

Plenty of names that don't end in 'a' though, but I have no idea about the Hungarian connection...

MintyMoo · 23/11/2010 17:34

I love Viola, the Shakesperian pronunciation is Vye - uh - luh, not vile-er, more focus on the 'uh luh' then the vile IYSWIM. I loved Twelfth Night at school - my fave Shakespeare play and I loved Viola's character. Always liked the name. Just make sure she never plays a string instrument though!

mrsnoname · 23/11/2010 18:08

hi Minty, there doesn't have to be a Hungarian connection at all Confused! I don't think any of these names originate from Hungary... viola happens to mean violet and that's about it.

Sorry, latest comment was meant for frakkinup.
