WDYT of the name Andy? It's been my favourite name for a while and I wasn't sure what other people thought of it.

Also what coud it be short for? I'm not keen on Andrea or Andra (sorry). I love Andromeda, but not sure if that's too much for a child.

i would spell it Andie if its for a girl...its alot more popular for girls than you think!

It's not in adulthood that it would worry me . Obviously as soon as you see or hear a female Sam it's quite clear it's a Samantha.
But for children in school uniforms it isn't always so obvious. I have seen little children get very upset when an adult stranger calls them a boy/girl by mistake....at the very least all their class mates laugh.

I know an Andrena which I think is lovely. You could have that on the Birth certificate and shorten to Andie.

Well, most of the children in school uniform I know are pretty obviously masculine or feminine.... and the little Morgans, Alex's and Charlies I know (both genders) have not been mistaken for the other gender once people get to know them.

Obviously not once people get to know them!

It is just a matter of opinion. There are lots of wonderful names for boys and for girls, and I prefered not to go for unisex names.

I quite like it especially spelt Andie.

I know girls called Finley, Cameron & Dylan.

I'm an Andrea - when I was a teen I was Andi, but never andy cos it sounds too boyish.

I would steer clear of giving a girl Andy as her full name, as it really is too boyish. (and naming her Andrea gives her the choice to change if she wants to)

Sorry.

ps: mine's pronounced bog standard way, but when I met a friend at 6th form ,she said it And-rey-a and it was soooo pretty. Grin

didn't last long though, cos everyone else pronounced it the normal way. :(

nickeldonkeyonadustyroad · 24/11/2010 15:41

poppy's got an idea though - you could use Andy as a nickname for Alexandra...

lilly13 · 24/11/2010 22:38

Is it a short form of Andrea or Adriana? If so, then I like these. Not a fan of Andy on its own - very cute for a baby, but too casual for a grown up...
